Kymmeniätuhansia ihmisä tappanut Muammar Qaddafi sai muutaman minuutin ajan kokea saman, mitä hän pakotti monet libyalaiset (ja ulkomaalaiset) kokemaan 42 vuoden ajan. Tähän oikeudenmukaisuuden pilkkeeseen suomalaiset reagoivat odotetusti:

Yhdysvallat on ryhtynyt liittolaisineen tappamaan itselleen epämieluisia henkisiä johtajia lennokeilla ja nyt valtionpäämiehiä taistelukoneilla. Kansainvälisen yhteisön tulisi tuomita tämä kovin ottein. -millä oikeudella

Liittouma sai YK:lta oikeudet ilmatilan suojeluun, mutta tosiasiallisesti vastoin YK:n lupaa pommitti siviilejä ja perääntyviä maajoukkoja. Raukkamaista ja rikollista. Sarkozy ja Obama tulisi viedä Haagin sotarikostuomioistuimeen tuomittaviksi. -HINNATALAS

A COURT has placed a 16-year-old girl on the airport watch list to prevent an arranged marriage taking place in Lebanon.

The girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, applied to the Federal Magistrates Court for an order to restrain her parents from taking her out of Australia to marry a man she had met only once.

The girl, given the pseudonym Ms Madley by the court, approached the Legal Aid Commission after her parents organised the wedding despite her telling them that she did not want to go to Lebanon and did not want to marry the man.
Mr Harman praised the girl's ''act of great bravery'' in using the legal system to challenge her parents' authority.
Ms Madley was fearful of her mother's reaction to her application, he said, and he ordered her mother and father not to assault, harass, threaten or intimidate her, or question her about the proceedings.

''Her actions in approaching the Legal Aid Commission, let alone this court, might be perceived as disrespectful of her parents and disobedient of their will,'' he said.

Although legally a minor, the girl had displayed maturity not only by taking action to protect herself from an arranged marriage, but deciding to challenge part of the Lebanese Islamic culture which she was brought up in. (Sydney Morning Herald)

In another article from the same newspaper someone says that arranged marriages are not necessarily a bad thing:

Lyn Fletcher, from Relationships Australia, said there was a big difference between arranged marriages and those which are forced.

"Some people are happy with an arranged marriage, because that's how they've been brought up they don't have any expectations of falling in love or romantic attachment," she said.

This doesn't really cast arranged marriages in any kind of a positive light. So arranged marriages are not that bad because women in some cultures have learned to live with them, i.e., have learned not to question the system? They've merely accepted their fate of having to live in a suffocating environment for the sake of the (extended) family, not because they want it.

It's precisely for this reason that it's good that this Australian case has gained some publicity, making it to the news even here in Finland. No doubt the city where I live is filled with dozens of immigrant women who think they have no choice but to submit to the authority of their families. These people should be made aware of the fact that there's a life beyond the role your family had decided for you the moment you were born.

Palestinian land grab

Mahmoud Abbas & co. are trying to stage a land grab of Israeli lands via the United Nations. Of course, the statehood bid won't go anywhere but that's not the point. To the Palestinians this is just another media stunt. The Palestinians want to make themselves seem desperate so that the world's useful idiots would sympathize with them despite the fact that the Palestinians have not only refused to negotiate with Israel as of late but have also launched several terrorist attacks in the past few months; they're defiant if anything, not desperate. At the same time Iran is building nuclear weapons and Turkey is in the process of cutting its ties with Israel in a shameful demonstration of Turkey's unfitness to ever join the civilized world. And people still expect Israel to make concessions. Israel's comprehensive 2000 peace proposal got rejected and was followed by terrorism. Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon and Gaza was followed by terrorism. Lately Israel has been dismantling checkpoints in an effort to bolster the West Bank's economy, freezing new buildings in the settlements and reaching out to the Palestinians. In return the Palestinians haven given Israel nothing but rockets. If the Palestinians want a home maybe they should kindly ask Israel to kick them back to Syria, Jordan and Egypt.

Strip clubs, pornography and feminists

The United States is an easy target when it comes to narrow-minded attitudes toward sexuality. Here's Texas, the heart of the Bible Belt:

In 2007, state legislators passed the Sexually Oriented Business Fee Act, which imposed the fee ["pole tax"] on nearly 200 establishments that feature live nude performances and allow the consumption of alcohol. The $5-per-customer entrance fee, which is imposed on the business and not the patron, is intended to raise money for sexual assault prevention programs and health insurance coverage for low-income people. (NYTimes)

This a form of collective punishment, which is kinda perverse in a country that values individual responsibility. The tax assumes that everyone attending strip clubs is responsible for the actions of a few rapists.

Moreover, open attitudes toward adult entertainment have actually been found to reduce violence against women. So, if the aim is to reduce the incidence of rape, Texan lawmakers should consider subsidizing strip clubs rather than taxing them.

But at least it's still legal in Texas to take your clothes off for money. In the so-called progressive Nordic countries women's rights and liberties are being curbed by feminists (a female supremacist movement that opposes individual liberties and equal rights) to a much, much greater degree than some conservatives in the United States ever could. Here's Julie Bindel, a feminist author, writing about banning strip clubs and pornography in Iceland:

Iceland has passed a law that will result in every strip club in the country being shut down.

Even more impressive: the Nordic state is the first country in the world to ban stripping and lapdancing for feminist, rather than religious, reasons.

So, feminists are united with religious extremists in their contempt of women's right to make decisions about their own lives. Only their reasons differ.

Kolbrún Halldórsdóttir, the politician who first proposed the ban, firmly told the national press on Wednesday: "It is not acceptable that women or people in general are a product to be sold."

This is just idiotic. How is selling "yourself" at a strip club any different from selling "yourself" at an office? Nearly every profession is a mixture of inherent talent and obtained skill and those are the things you're selling. The labor market consists of people selling themselves. So, the problem is not that these people are selling themselves as "products"; the problem is that feminists don't happen to like this particular product even though it's none of their business. Feminists, like religious extremists, have a vision of what a proper woman is like (even their rhetoric is similar: "It is not acceptable that women..."). Any deviations from this standard are to be looked down upon. Feminists perceive women not as adult individuals capable of using their own discretion but as child-like members of a collective who are to do what the collective tells them to do.

Supporters of the bill say that some of the clubs are a front for prostitution – and that many of the women work there because of drug abuse and poverty rather than free choice. I have visited a strip club in Reykjavik and observed the women. None of them looked happy in their work.

What an idiot. If "not looking happy" or "working just to make ends meet" is a qualification for banning an occupation, I guess all of us are to be unemployed in the not-so-distant future. Simple-minded authoritarians like Bindel are not really helping the situation by not showing much of any respect for these women. If feminists and cultural conservatives actually respected women working in the adult industry (and taught their children to respect them as well), these women might have a better time at work and life in general. I'd guess that a big reason why some women in the adult industry don't feel appreciated is precisely because narrow-minded people like Bindel don't appreciate them as adults capable of making their own decisions. Instead, they're trying to force-feed the "you're a victim" mantra. This could also explain why drug abusers and poor people are overrepresented in the adult industry; only they've really got nothing to lose. Mainstreamization of pornography would attract more "mainstream" people. In fact, it's not surprising anymore to find that an adult entertainer holds an academic degree. Of course, feminists probably consider well-educated women who choose to work in the adult industry as traitors.

Let's end this post on a positive note:

Let’s look at attitudes towards women – studies of men who had seen X-rated movies found that they were significantly more tolerant and accepting of women than those men that didn’t see those movies, and studies by other investigators, female as well as male, essentially found similarly that there was no detectable relationship of the amount of exposure to pornography and any measure of misogynist attitudes. No researcher or critic has found the opposite, that exposure to pornography – by any definition – has had a cause and effect relationship towards ill feelings or actions against women. No correlation has even been found between exposure to porn and calloused attitudes toward women.

Tasa-arvo ja pitkät hiukset

Kirjoitin tasa-arvovaltuutettumme tekemisistä viimeksi täällä. Taas on nähtävästi kunnon tekemiset loppuneet, kun pitää puuttua siihen, millaiset hiukset firmoihin sopii:

Tasa-arvovaltuutettu haastaa armeijaa harkitsemaan, millaiset hiukset sotilaalla voi olla. Valtuutettu salli tuoreessa lausunnossaan yrityksen miestyöntekijän siistit pitkät hiukset. Puolustusvoimat ei ole havainnut muutoksen tarvetta.

Yhdysvaltalaisomisteinen jakelufirma määräsi omissa ohjeissaan, että asiakaspalvelutyössä naisilla voi olla pitkä tukka mutta miehillä ei.

Tasa-arvovaltuutettu Pirkko Mäkisen lausunnon mukaan suomalaisessa yhteiskunnassa miehellä voi olla pitkät, siistit hiukset. Jos miesten hiusten pituutta rajoitetaan vain sukupuolen takia, kyse on syrjinnästä. (YLE)

Nyt valtio siis päättää, minkälaiset hiukset miehellä saa työpaikalla olla. Tällä ei tietenkään pitäisi olla mitään tekemistä syrjinnän kanssa. Hiustyylihän on hankittu ominaisuus, johon jokainen yksilö voi vaikuttaa; pitkätukkaisia yksilöitä ei syrjitä, sillä hehän voivat aina leikata hiuksensa. Samoin koulutus on hankittu ominaisuus ja näin ollen pätevä perustelu "syrjinnälle". Tätä vastoin esimerkiksi ihonväriin yksilö ei kykene mitenkään itse vaikuttamaan, joten sen perusteella syrjiminen on sekä epäreilua että typerää. (Yksityisomaisuuden tapauksessa syrjinnän tosin pitäisi olla sallittua. Kilpailullisilla markkinoilla tällaisesta syrjinnästä olisi lähinnä haittaa.) Jakelufirman tapauksessa nähtävästi sekä miehiltä että naisilta odotettiin siisteyttä, joten "syrjintä" tässä tapauksessa perustui hankittuun ominaisuuteen, siisteyteen, eikä sukupuoleen.

No onpa kiva, että jotkut tykkäävät. Virkamiehethän voisivat kieltää mitä tahansa, ja aivan varmasti jokaiselle kiellolle löytyisi tuhansia kannattajia. Esimerkiksi sananvapaudesta päästäisiin äkkiä eroon tällä tavalla, kun vaan kiellettäisiin tiettyjä puheenaiheita kerrallaan. Jos joku virkamies esimerkiksi onnistuisi kieltämään Jumalan pilkkaamisen, niin hän todennäköisesti saisi uskovaisilta satoja ylistäviä kirjeitä. Tällaisen hiljattaisen vapauksien kapenemisen ohella turhan byrokratian määrä lisääntyy, mikä lisää kaikenlaisia kustannuksia, kun esimerkiksi firman perustamista harkitsevat kohtaavat entistä suuremman läjän turhia regulaatioita.

Samaisessa uutisessa kuitenkin mainitaan, että armeijassa erilaiset siisteysstandardit ovat olleet hyväksyttäviä, mutta että tähänkin pitäisi tulla muutos:

- Kyllä minä haastan puolustushallintoa seuraamaan aktiivisesti sitä kehitystä, jota yhteiskunnassa tapahtuu ja miettimään, milloin on harkinnan paikka, Mäkinen kehottaa.

Huomattavaa on, että tässä puhutaan nimenomaan miesten pitkien hiusten sallimisesta, ei armeijassa palvelevien pitkähiuksisten naisten pakottamisesta hiustenleikkuuseen, vaikka se olisi tietenkin perustellumpaa, voivathan pitkät hiukset aiheuttaa täiepidemioiden ohella ongelmia kenttäolosuhteissa.

Armeija on lisääntyvissä määrin joutumassa kaikenlaisten ideologien yhteiskunnallisten ihmisenmuokkausprojektien kohteeksi. Aiemminhan hallitus päätti maamiinakiellosta, vedoten puhtaasti idealistisiin, maanpuolustuksen kannalta järjettömiin, syihin. Mäkinen itse on ajanut löysempiä kuntotasovaatimuksia armeijassa palveleville naisille, mikä tietenkin tasa-arvon rikkomisen ohella heikentäisi armeijan kykyä suoriutua maanpuolustustehtävästään.

Nähtävästi tasa-arvolla menee aika hyvin Suomessa, kun tasa-arvovaltuutettu ei parempaa tekemistä keksi. Virka on selkeästi turha, varsinkin kun tämän viran puitteissa tuskin puututaan niihin kahteen räikeimpään tasa-arvo-ongelmaan eli miesten pakolliseen asevelvollisuuteen ja naisten suosimiseen huoltajuuskiistoissa.

Pettämätöntä logiikkaa:

Sisäministeri Päivi Räsäsen (kd.) mielestä ravintoloissa tapahtuvaan seksikauppaan puututtaisiin parhaiten kieltämällä seksin osto Ruotsin malliin.

Räsäsen mukaan ostokielto selkeyttäisi pelisääntöjä.

- Toimintaan pystyttäisiin aina puuttumaan, tapahtuipa se sitten yleisellä paikalla tai ei, hän sanoo lehdelle. (Iltalehti)

Pari päivää sitten uutisoitiin, että tullin haaviin jäi kevään ja kesän aikana lasti laittomia potenssilääkkeitä. Kerta oli tuskin ensimmäinen, eli voimme olettaa mustan pörssin lääkekaupan olevan jonkin sortin ongelma. Räsäsen logiikan mukaisesti ehdotan lääkkeiden oston kieltoa. Samaan hengenvetoon ehdotan pelien ja elokuvien ostokieltoa, jotta piratismiin "pystyttäisiin aina puuttumaan".

Kristillisdemokraattien Räsänen nähtävästi käyttää asemaansa sisäministerinä hyväkseen ajaakseen kristittyjen sairaita seksuaalinormeja Suomen lakiin.

Joku "laitonta miehitystä" vastustava aktivisti haluaa töhriä julkisia paikkoja Palestiina-myönteisillä piirustuksilla:

Tampereen keskustaan suunnitellun rauhankyyhkyjä esittävän katumaalauksen kieltäminen on herättänyt keskustelua. Taiteilija Juho Viitala olisi teoksellaan halunnut kiinnittää huomiota Israelin Palestiinan-politiikkaan. Koska maalaus on poliittisesti kantaaottava, maalauksen kieltoa on pidetty jopa sananvapautta rajoittavana.

- Yritin siinä viestittää, että laiton miehitys, joka palestiinalaisalueilla on jatkunut loputtomiin Israelin toimesta, niin se ei varmastikaan ole kovin hyvä asia Suomen ulkopoliittisen linjan kanssa olla ristiriidassa niin vakavasti, puolustusministeriön materiaalihankinnat ja vastakauppasopimukset. Onpa idioottimaista kuvitella, että tällä olisi jotain tekemistä sananvapauden kanssa. Kyseessä on (oletettavasti) verovaroin ylläpidetty julkinen tila. Suuri(n) osa veronmaksajista ei varmasti hyväksyisi heidän kustantamansa kävelyalueen tuhrimista poliittisilla kannanotoilla.

Jos Viitalalla pitäisi olla oikeus esittää poliittisia kannanottoja tällä tavalla, niin kai hänen mielestään olisi täysin hyväksyttävää, että joku Israelia kannattava taho kävisi poliittisena mielenilmaisuna suttaamassa ko. katumaalauksen, kyseinen tila kun kuuluu tietenkin yhtä paljon Israelia kannattaville kuin Israelia vastustavillekin.

Talousrikollisten vankilatuomioita halutaan pidentää. Asiantuntijan mukaan nykyistä kovemmat rangaistukset vähentäisivät talousrikollisuutta. Uusi oikeusministeri Anna-Maja Henriksson (r.) käynnistää selvityksen rangaistusten koventamisesta. (YLE)

Samaan aikaan ihmisarvottomat raiskaajat ja henkirikosten tekijät selviävät parin vuoden linnareissulla johtuen oikeuslaitoksen virkamiesten kollektiivisesta mielenhäiriöstä.

Tyypillinen talousrikos on rakennusalalla tehty verorikos

Toisin sanoen, tyypillisessä talousrikoksessa rikos koostuu siitä, että "rikoksentekijä" ei suostu luopumaan omista rahoistaan.

Monet asiantuntijat ovat sitä mieltä, että ehdottomat vankilatuomiot ja pidemmät rangaistukset vähentäisivät talousrikollisuutta.
- Kyse on paljolti tuomioistuinten käytännöstä. Suomeenkin olisi kuitenkin lakiin hyvä saada kuuden vuoden maksimirangaistus. Tämä varmasti vähentäisi intoa tehdä talousrikoksia.

Jostain ihmeen syystä henkirikosten kohdalla kuitenkin kuvitellaan, että ankarammat rangaistukset eivät ehkäisisi henkirikoksia, vaikka niitäkin tehdään "harkitusti".

Banning landmines - naive and dangerous idealism

Now that a bunch of naive idealists in the government have agreed to get rid of landmines, it's fitting to quote Charles Krauthammer (2004):

Realists do not live just in America. I found one in Finland. During the 1997 negotiations in Oslo over the land mine treaty, one of the rare holdouts, interestingly enough, was Finland. The Finnish prime minister stoutly opposed the land mine ban. And for that he was scolded by his Scandinavian neighbors. To which he responded tartly that this was a “very convenient” pose for the “other Nordic countries”--after all, Finland is their land mine.

Finland is the land mine between Russia and Scandinavia. America is the land mine between barbarism and civilization.

Our president (and commander in chief), Tarja Halonen, has been an advocate of the landmine ban. An officer in the Finnish military was recently fined for calling her incompetent.

Tragedy in Norway and the assault on individual liberties

Since Anders Behring Breivik used to play Modern Warfare 2 with the intended purpose of learning military tactics, why don't we ban the game? This is pretty much the line of reasoning dozens of politicians have utilized in the wake of recent school shootings in various countries. This is the line of reasoning Finnish politicians and wannabe politicans are now utilizing to further their political agendas in the wake of the mass murder in Norway. Our Minister for Foreign Affairs, Erkki Tuomioja, wants to put restrictions on online "hate speech", specifying hate speech as speech that encourages people to do what Breivik did. (I haven't seen such hate speech myself, kinda like I have never seen child pornography on the internet even though some politicians make it sound as if you can't get far without running into such pornography.) More specifically, he wants to restrict the use of aliases which champions of free speech have historically used in order to avoid persecution. Dissidents in China, the Middle East and so on rely on anonymity. He also wants to restrict gun ownership rights, saying that "no one needs" guns with magazine capacity at or above 30, as if it were up to him to decide what people need.

It's a disgrace that the actions of a single madman are used as a pretext to curb individual liberties, liberties that belong to everyone, liberties that the vast majority of us use in a responsible way. This is why there aren't many lessons to be learned from the massacre. Anti-immigration "racists" are no more responsible for what Breivik did than Modern Warfare 2 is. A quick look at Breivik's political positions reveals that the guy is a mess if anything, combining Christianity, liberalism (he cites classical liberals such as F.A. Hayek, Ludwig von Mises and even Ayn Rand who was a staunch atheist), conservatism, anti-Marxism, Islamophobia, nationalism etc. in his writings. None of these in particular makes him mad. Breivik was mad in believing that his actions would spark a European civil war that'd end by the year 2083. If anything, this resembles Charles Manson's reasoning (Manson believed that the murders he orchestrated would ignite a race war that'd inevitably be won by blacks) and Masonic conspiracy theories (Breivik was a Freemason). Moreover, Breivik's writing is incredibly child-like and idiotic, as revealed by the fact that he actually proposes using Modern Warfare 2 as a military simulator and World of Warcraft as a means to hide your real activities.

So, look no further than the fact that Anders Behring Breivik was both a lunatic and an idiot. You're not helping anything by attributing Breivik's behavior to video games and broken marriages like this Swedish terrorism expert does, citing video games and his parents' broken marriage as causes of his "personality disorder". Should we draw the conclusion that you belong to some kind of a risk group if 1) your parents are divorced and 2) you play Modern Warfare 2? How many millions does that make? I'm sure many of you can name a few who meet the requirements. But how many people you know who could actually start shooting kids? Our "anti-immigration" politician Timo Soini said it best: "We're talking about a single fanatic, a psychopath and the murders he committed."

We should not start restricting our liberties simply because some lunatics abuse theirs. For lunatics, any excuse will do. We just have to live with it (and punish these individuals when they do act); that's the price of liberty. Otherwise, if we do start restricting our liberties, there's nothing left to live for. This is why I'm more worried about what our politicians will do now than I'm worried about the next attack. Restricting the use of online aliases would alone be a greater tragedy than the massacre in Norway.

There's a very serious lesson to be drawn from all this and that is that the Norwegian state failed in what is the most fundamental responsibility of the state; protecting individuals from criminals. While the massacre was ongoing the local police did nothing but wait for a SWAT unit that then ran into some difficulties before finally making it to the island. It's also telling that Breivik didn't shoot himself once he was done. When news of the incident started to emerge I immediately assumed the killer had committed suicide. China is not a model

The Economist has another typical article that degenerates into treating China with words like "ooh" and "aah". First the article lists economic and political similarities between the US and the EU and then starts drawing comparisons to China, implying that the Chinese government (or any authoritarian regime) could cope with financial crises more effectively than "dysfunctional" democracies. Maybe, but let's not start treating China as some kind of a model until comparisons between the West and China become valid. Despite the fact that the Chinese GDP soon catches up with that of the US, their current GDP per capita is less than one tenth of that of the US. The time to start drawing comparisons is when the Communist party has made it possible for the Chinese to enjoy Western levels of prosperity. With their current political and economic system there's no chance of that happening.

There's one good point there though: "Every year China continues to grow, the case that countries need to be democracies in order to become wealthy and developed becomes more tenuous."

Of course, this is nothing new. During the Cold War many 3rd world countries adopted the Soviet system as an economic model. What failed them was not any lack of democracy but the centrally-planned economic system that China has now somewhat abandoned. Even in the West many countries were economically liberal before they were politically liberal. It was the wealth brought on by Capitalism that made people in the West demand more political liberties. This is also what makes the Chinese leadership so nervous.

It is Capitalism that brings stability in the first place because materially well-off people have a lot to lose if they resort to petty factionalism. (No wonder then that Communist revolutions took place exactly where Marx least expected them.) This is why democratic countries that have been made prosperous by Capitalism are stable while attempts to introduce democracy prior to Capitalism tend to result in failures.

Online message boards of major Finnish news organizations got quickly filled with typically anti-American reactions to the news of Osama bin Laden's death. There are dozens of threads that deal with the issue, each one spanning many pages. Below is a sample of these reactions, taken from just one page of two threads at YLE & HS websites. I didn't even bother to go through more pages but the threads are a treasure trove of human stupidity. I won't provide translations but subjects range from conspiracy theories (e.g., bin Laden was killed years ago and kept in a freezer somewhere until Obama decided to boost his approval ratings) to snobby pseudo-intellectual "won't change a thing" type of comments with the typical "America behaved recklessly" comment thrown in every now and then:

Israel Remains Vigilant

Another reminder of why Gaza is under blockade and why Israel has no choice but to intercept ships heading for the region:

The Israeli navy has intercepted an Egypt-bound ship carrying a large delivery of weapons off Israel's Mediterranean coast. It said the arms had been sent by Syria to Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip.

The Victoria is German-owned, operated by a French shipping company and had been sailing under a Liberian flag, the military said. German, French and Liberian authorities have been notified of the seizure. (Guardian)

Here's what they found.

Despite this, Europeans are becoming increasingly delusional about Israel:

Asked to respond to the statement that “Israel is conducting a war of extermination against the Palestinians,” 47.7 percent of the study’s participants in Germany expressed agreement – the highest number in Western Europe....

The statement “Considering Israel’s policy, I can understand why people do not like Jews” met with 35.6% affirmation in Germany, while 35.9% of British respondents were in agreement. In the Netherlands, 41.1% favored the assertion, as did 55.2% in Poland, 45.6% in Hungary and 48.8% in Portugal. France declined to participate.

Whatever happens, Palestinian terrorists can always rely on their European allies.

At Least They Have a Diversity of Opinions

Vivian Schiller, the now-former president of National Public Radio (the American equivalent of YLE, although much more insignificant), resigned after her colleague was caught saying (among other things) this:

"Liberals today might be more educated, fair and balanced than conservatives,"

Conservatives are probably going to take the thing about not being as well educated as liberals as a compliment, as they should. It's the anti-intellectualism of American conservatives, and conservatism in general, that makes conservatism pragmatic. This is in sharp contrast to the liberal idealists now occupying the White House who are more prone to idealist, theoretical considerations that end up ballooning the federal deficit for the sake of an ideology.

The claim about liberals being more fair & balanced than conservatives is pretty funny, especially considering how this news wasn't even considered main headline-worthy on CNN while Fox News thought otherwise. This is nothing new. For example, both the despicable union demonstrations in Wisconsin and the Planned Parenthood case have hardly been mentioned by Fox's competitors. A Fox News host today noted that if the Tea Party were involved in some demonstration in a manner similar to the Wisconsin unions, CNN would be all over it. (A similar point is often raised by the lovely Megyn Kelly, who's always quick to note that a given news story was first broken by Fox.)

So why is this particular news headline-worthy? Because NPR enjoys privileges that other channels don't. The medium has lately been dominated by conservatives while Democrats have been wanting to level the playing field via legislation. Fox News, a champion of individual liberty (at least in the relative sense), is of course anxious to report scandals involving pro-government forces especially if Fox is worried that it could one day be competing with powerful state-controlled media outlets. We could use some of Fox's spirit here in Finland where the state-controlled YLE dominates and hardly anyone has any problems with it (except for the licence fee). This isn't exactly a wonder in a country where party differences are marginal and consensus dominates. The very fact that Finns (this applies to other Europeans as well) consider Fox News a problem while not noticing the obvious bias of our state-controlled broadcaster pretty much shows how YLE is a problem.

The Power of Ideas and the Middle East

I recently finished reading Francis Fukuyama's The End of History and the Last Man, a controversial book according to which the liberal democratic system would ultimately prevail over alternatives. The book, based on an article in the National Interest, was written at a time when the Soviet system was collapsing. To put it simply, Fukuyama's thesis relies on two arguments:

1) Scientific knowledge, which Fukuyama associates with modern capitalism, accumulates in the sense that it's not possible to reverse the course of scientific advancement and as such it's not really possible to reverse the course of human history (for extended periods, that is).

2) People everywhere possess what Fukuyama calls thymos (from Ancient Greek), the desire for recognition, which goes unfulfilled in non-democratic systems because dictatorships don't recognize individuals as sovereign, as adults capable of independent thought and action. Thymos is just one part of the soul, however, as the soul also has desiring and reasoning parts.

If prosperity brought on by the free-market economy can fulfill the desiring and reasoning parts of the "soul", the thymotic part of the soul can only be fulfilled by granting the individual some inalienable rights, including the right to participate in the political process. Democracy can also effectively restrain individuals with megalothymia, the desire to be recognized as superior to others, while still allowing these individuals to excel in ways that don't interfere with the rights of others. And once this liberal democratic system has been imposed, it's unlikely to collapse. We may have thousands of unsatisfied people at any given time but they have no credible alternatives to liberal democracy. (The downside, according to Fukuyama, is that a world where people no longer have to struggle for recognition is a world without great human achivements; a world that is, simply put, boring.)

Fukuyama's book was written at a time when Easter Europe was going through a series of revolutions, the Autumn of Nations, which resulted in what had been considered unthinkable up until then; total disintegration of the Soviet Union with no shots fired (technically that's not true but you get the point). Now there's a chance of something similar happening in the Middle East, at least with respect to "struggle for recognition".

Of course the events in Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen and Jordan are not the first phases of a liberal revolution but they do address something that Arab dictators have long tried to ignore; the need of the average Arab citizen to be recognized as a citizen, not a subject. But the definition of a citizen varies as there are more competing societal models in the Middle East than there were in Europe in 1989. Communism had promised material abundance which never materialized. The free market system, on the other hand, had been tried and proven by then, so there was no question as to what should replace communism. Traditional authoritarianism in the Middle East might as well be replaced with an Islamic alternative. Islam is hostile to both free markets and democracy and Islamic movements in countries such as Egypt are anxious to consolidate power after having settled for a minor role for decades.

Islam remains a threat to the Middle East because there's no tradition of secularism in the Muslim world. Europe had Reformation, and the wars it brought, but many Muslims still dream of going back to the old days, days when the Muslim world was united under one caliphate bent on expansion. Fukuyama argues that Christianity contributed to democracy in spreading the idea that all people are equal in the eyes of God. The problem was that this would matter in afterlife only. God had to be taken off the equation - Christianity had to be secularized (at first via Reformation, then via the Enlightenment) before the idea of equality could be applied to our existence on this rock. Except for countries like Turkey which went through a process of quick and forced secularization, the Muslim world has yet to witness a similar process.

But while the current situation is not a liberal revolution and while it carries great risks, it's not the starting point for the establishment of a new caliphate either. Yesterday (on Fox News) Glenn Beck was going on about how the situation in the Middle East could lead to the establishment of a new caliphate, stretching all the way from Pakistan to the UK. This is of course a completely ludicrous idea. While there's no tradition of secularism in the Muslim world, the average Egyptian is not exactly a puritan Muslim either and as such is not too keen to hand power to extremists. The very fact that the extremist Muslim Brotherhood has tried to appear as a moderate force throughout the crisis pretty much proves this. Egypt is not the Iran of 1979 in the sense that there isn't a similar backlash against modernization (Westernization) in Egypt. Another obstacle to a caliphate is nationalism, which played a prominent role in the struggle against European colonial powers. While the Muslim identity surpasses the national identity, this does not automatically mend fences between dozens of Muslim groups. The United Arab Republic lasted for only three years even at a time when Egypt and Syria shared a common enemy. With different factions killing - or waiting for the opportunity to kill - each other, how can anyone expect these people to form a caliphate when they are nowhere near getting their own houses in order? The fact that Beck wears glasses these days doesn't make him any smarter.

At the moment the situation in the Middle East seems chaotic and the outcome unpredictable but the prospect of a change in a system that is hostile to all three parts of Fukuyama's "soul" sounds better than mere stability. The status quo, which the Western world has helped maintain, has been feeding resentment in the Middle East for decades now with hardly any proof that it's been worth it.

"Cairo today is all of Egypt," he said. "I want my son to have a better life and not suffer as much as I did ... I want to feel like I chose my president."

Gay extinction, to a degree?

Homosexuals across the world are celebrating their sexuality, expecting their numbers to increase in the near future as tolerance spreads from one corner of the globe to another. However, it should be at least considered that the result of this tolerance may be the exact opposite of what they're expecting: that homosexuality as a biological trait may, in fact, become endangered as a result of this tolerance. Let's establish a few facts first:

First, it'd be ludicrous to claim that homosexuality is, by and large, a choice. Some Christians want it to be so, so that the "naturalness" of homosexuality would not conflict with their "God created man in his image" view.

Second, as implied above, homosexuality is, to a degree, hereditary, i.e., the offspring of a person with "gay genes" (but who's not necessarily gay) is more likely to be gay than the offspring of a straight person. Obviously genes are not the only biological factor affecting sexuality but they are a significant factor nevertheless.

Third, one reason why homosexuality has survived this far despite its obvious selective disadvantage is precisely because of the society's negative attitude toward homosexuality in the past. When gays weren't tolerated and it was assumed that everyone marries at one point in their lives, this effectively ensured that homosexuals too managed to pass on their genes even if in an unwanted union with a straight person.

Combine these and you've got a situation where the "coming out" of gays might contribute negatively to the overall number of homosexuals. If homosexuals are no longer under societal pressure to procreate with the opposite sex then they won't whileas their own sexual desires are an evolutionary dead end.

This isn't to be misunderstood. Genes influencing homosexuality can spread even if there are no homosexuals left and even if we disregard genes, homosexuality may still result from fetal-stage disruptions. But the point I'm making is that the recent openness toward homosexuality may have a negative effect on the proliferation of those genes, not that gays will go extinct.

This also makes all fears of homosexuality overblown. The reason why homosexuality seems to be on the rise is because of the "coming out" factor, not because homosexuality as a biological feature is on the rise. The latter would be ludicrous as there are no evolutionary benefits to being gay. (In fact, there may be some but hardly anything that'd lead to a notable proliferation of homosexuality.)

And for the same reason it's stupid to claim that "heteronormativity" is a social construct. People are not heterosexual because society forces them to but because heterosexuality is the only kind of sexuality that makes sense from an evolutionary point of view. If, as a result of genetic drift (chance) maybe, bisexuality were the norm, it wouldn't take long for evolution to take us right back to "heteronormativity".

Thou Shalt Not Burn the Qu'ran

A recent stunt by Finnish freethinkers involved exchanging bibles (and other religious nonsense) for porn magazines. This aroused some controversy but, as far as I can remember, there were no calls to have the freethinkers arrested for inciting religious hatred. But in Britain, and quite probably soon in Finland too, you can get arrested for burning the Qur'an. Of course, British freethinkers would not even be able to pull off a stunt like the one described in the opening sentence because local Muslims would immediately resort to violence, if necessary, to prevent their worthless book from being traded for porn. And local authorities, instead of guaranteeing the freethinkers' right to exchange goods for goods (and voice their opinion in doing so), would side with the Muslims to preserve whatever peace and order (our consensus) Europeans happen to value over liberty.

Chief executive officer of the Muslim Public Affairs Committee, Catherine Heseltine, slammed the burning of the Koran - one of the most offensive acts to Muslims she could imagine.

Why have extremists been interviewed for the news article? This woman is obviously only concerned with the fact that someone dared to burn their holy book rather than with the fact that authorities arrested a 15-year-old girl for it. Some local dhimmi politician interviewed for the article also failed to see this in terms of freedom of speech and religious liberty, instead bringing up how damage control is being done to appease Muslims. Once again, it's the feelings of the local Muslim community that matter the most, not liberty.

'You can see that in the way Muslims treat the Koran - washing before touching it and in many Muslim homes you will find it on the top shelf above all other books.

Is this supposed to make one respect Muslims' beliefs? I for one consider it merely hilarious and pathetic that some people feel the need to clean themselves before touching junk.

I also wouldn't mind seeing some British Muslims arrested the next time they incite ethnic hatred by burning the Union Jack, for example. Of course, both Muslims and non-Muslims should have the right to express their opinion but for as long as these double standards exist, Muslims won't give a damn about freedom of speech.

God is responsible for ethnic conflicts

There was a time when mankind was united, in pursuit of a common goal, the goal of living up to our potential. And what did God do? Well, he'd have none of it so he struck us down and divided us among nations in order to keep us separated.

Let's take some tiny leaps of logic: God wanted us not to get along --> Christians believe that everything God does is for the good (the "God works in mysterious ways" thing is just another way of telling you that you're too stupid to understand why bad things need to be done) --> Christians think ethnic conflicts are good --> Christians support ethnic conflicts (they wouldn't want to be against God now would they?).

Tällainen sinisilmäinen "vaikuttaminen" perustunee oletukseen, että Lähi-idän ongelmat loppuvat, kunhan Israel laskee aseensa, aivan kuin Lähi-idän konfliktin historia olisi täynnä instansseja, joissa Israelin rauhaneleet oltaisiin palkittu jollakin muulla kuin Israelin siviileihin kohdistuvalla väkivallalla.

A 25-year-old Brit, Keith Macdonald, has fathered 15 children with 14 women while living on unemployment benefits like most of his "victims" (the article doesn't use the word specifically but it's implied; I'd use a less flattering word) who're also dependent on government assistance and will remain so for the foreseeable future.

Biological fitness can be measured by the number of offspring an individual produces during his or her lifetime. What biological features increase fitness is defined by the environment which, in human context, includes the society. It is then no wonder that the welfare state has changed the environment so that people who less than a hundred years ago would have been considered "unfit" are now among the fit thanks to taxpayer-funded welfare checks.

One could draw the apparent conclusion that we're on a degenerative path heading towards some kind of an idiocracy. Obviously, this won't happen as the welfare system is dependent on production which in turn is defined by how the society allocates its factors of production; capital and labor. The overall tax burden cannot be increased indefinitely without causing the system to collapse (at high tax rates, government revenue starts to fall) which would leave the high-breeding, non-working individuals without a safety net.

This is the backdrop against which the Gaza blockade should be viewed. The ruling entity of Gaza is waging an open war against Israel. Meanwhile in Europe, useful idiots are setting up demonstrations against Israel, calling for an end to the blockade, an end that'd only make it much easier for Hamas to obtain weapons and continue its xenocidal war against Israel. And as these acts of terror are attributed to Islamist extremists such as Hamas, "mainstream" Palestinian politicians display their moderatism by attending the funeral of a mass-murdering extremist. The Palestinian "culture of death" is on display in the streets of Gaza as well, with Gazans celebrating the deaths of four Israeli civilians three days ago.

And some people want to make it easier for these people to obtain weapons...

The Economist and its leftward spiral

The Economist warns of the dangers of Big Government. Funny, because I vaguely remember the Economist advocating not only Barack Obama's election but also the fiscal stimulus, the bank rescue package and the health care reform. This is the trend the news magazine has had for at least the past four years that I have been a subscriber. First they advocate interventionist policies and then, especially if those policies backfire, they argue that we should be cautious of such policies. Usually they leave cunning openings for themselves, allowing them to take credit however things turn out. I guess they really want to make it seem like they're sticking to their stated principles while in fact advocating policies that betray those principles.

Finland, the best country according to some

Newsweek ranked Finland as the best country in the world to live in. Finns just love it when they're noticed abroad which, if you ask me, is quite pathetic. What's even more pathetic is the way our media is treating this. They're referring to Newsweek as "prestigious", completely leaving out the fact that it suffers from a heavy left-wing bias. A quick look at the "advisory board" behind the ranking reveals something the media hasn't been able to figure out: that the ranking was written by leftists (including Stiglitz) and a few centrists. And this is what our Minister for Foreign Affairs considers the best news of the year.

Haastateltu mies viittasi Suomen suhteellisesti alhaiseen maahanmuuttajamäärään verrattuna muuhun Länsi-Eurooppaan ja esitti, että tällaisessa tilanteessa on "epärehellistä pelotella maahanmuutolla".

On totta, että Suomessa on vähän (islamilaisia) maahanmuuttajia verrattuna esimerkiksi Ruotsiin, mutta nimenomaan tästä syystä maahanmuuttokysymykseen tulee puuttua nyt eikä vasta sitten, kun meillä on jokaviikkoisia mellakoita ja koulunpolttajaisia ranskalaisten lähiöiden tai Malmön tyyliin. Maahanmuuttajien määrän kasvaessa heidän poliittinen valtansa myös kasvaa, mikä vaikeuttaa maahanmuuttokysymysten ratkaisua. Koska moni maahanmuuttaja on riippuvainen valtion tuista, hyvinvointipalveluita ajava vasemmisto vahvistuu. Näin syntyy antisemitistinen allianssi. Samaan aikaan lisääntyvät ongelmat vahvistavat (ääri)oikeistoa. Äärimmilleen vedetty polarisaatio voidaan välttää, jos maahanmuuttokysymykset nostetaan esille heti.

Islamilaisen maahanmuuton järkevyyttä on siis syytäkin miettiä nyt, kun muiden eurooppalaisten valtioiden idealistisen maahanmuuttopolitiikan vaikutukset ovat kaikkien nähtävillä. Suomi on tämän takia hyvässä asemassa, kun taas esimerkiksi Malmössä on jo liian myöhäistä miettiä, kannattaako niitä rajoja pitää auki. Siellä mietitään pikemminkin, että voisivatko muslimit hoitaa asiansa sharia-tuomioistuimissa ja että voidaanko kouluissa opettaa evoluutioteoriaa muslimilapsille. Jos suomalaiset haluavat joutua pohtimaan samanlaisia asioita, niin pidetään suut kiinni maahanmuuttokysymyksistä ja rajat auki. Perussuomalaiset eivät ole nousseet siksi, että suomalaiset olisivat yhtäkkiä alkaneet pitämään ahdasmielisestä populismista, vaan siksi, että suomalaisten mielestä maahanmuuttokysymyksistä tulee käydä korkean profiilin keskustelua.

SAK:n ja STTK:n ylläpitämään kesäduunari-infoon on ilmoitettu ympäri Suomen jopa alle viiden euron tuntipalkoista. Moni työnantaja laistaa myös sunnuntain tuplapalkasta.
Puhelujen perusteella joillekin jäätelökioskimyyjille on maksettu ympäri Suomen alle viiden euron tuntipalkkaa, joka on liian vähäinen kaupan työehtosopimusten mukaan.

Ehkä nyt ei ole paras aika lähteä vaatimaan työehtosopimusten mukaista palkkaa. Monet firmat eivät ole finanssikriisin aikaisina kesinä kovin innostuneesti palkanneet kesätyöläisiä. Jos kesätyöläisiä pidettäisiin tuottavina, heitä palkattaisiin. Yleisesti ottaen firmat eivät ole mitään rahasampoja, joten pienikin ero tuntipalkassa voi olla hyvin merkittävä.

Kauppalehden kommenttiosaston porukka nähtävästi kuvittelee, että firmoilla on suurin piirtein rajattomasti rahaa tällaisinakin aikoina. Firmat eivät vaan silkkaa ahneuttaan maksa työehtosopimusten mukaista palkkaa. Muutenkin vaikuttaa siltä, että porukka ajattelee suuremman minimipalkan olevan automaattisesti hyvä ja edistyksellinen juttu, vailla haittavaikutuksia.

The legality of Israel's actions

Michael Halila is trying to make a case (here and here) against Israel by making it seem that the illegality of the flotilla interception is clear. Of course, I'm no legal expert, so I don't know whether the interception was illegal or not but, contrary to the tone in Halila's post, the issue seems far from clear.

Moreover, the issue of legality is not important - at all. If international law prevents Israel from defending the lives of her citizens, she should have every right to violate such a law. Similarly, if any law prevents an individual from acting in self-defense, the law should rightfully be ignored. The issue that does matter is that the flotillas - sponsored by the IHH, a radical islamic organization with ties to terrorist groups - were headed toward Gaza which Israel had placed under an embargo due to valid security concerns. Israel is at war with Hamas - a terrorist group whose aim is the destruction of the Jewish state - and Hamas is in control of Gaza. Legal technicalities are just that - legal technicalities. Israel was right to act.

And while Michael calls the defenders of Israel "useful idiots", he better remember that his reaction to the incident is exactly what the "activists" set out to bring about.

And now that another ship, MV Rachel Corrie, is headed for Israel, the "humanitarians" on board better take note that their aid wouldn't reach Gaza anyway:

Israel has attempted to deliver humanitarian aid from an international flotilla to Gaza, but Hamas -- which controls the territory -- has refused to accept the cargo, the Israel Defense Forces said Wednesday.

Palestinian sources confirmed that trucks that arrived from Israel at the Rafah terminal at the Israel-Gaza border were barred from delivering the aid.

Saarto mahdollistaa turvatarkastukset, joilla nämä aseet pidetään juutalaisvaltion vihollisten ulottumattomissa.

"Ihmisoikeusaktivistien" pyrkimyksillä ajaa saarron läpi "avustusaluksilla" ei ole tietenkään mitään tekemistä humanitäärisen avustuksen kanssa. Kyseessä on alusta pitäen ollut tarkoitushakuinen pr-temppu, jolla taas saataisiin maailman mielipide mahdollisimman juutalaisvastaiseksi. LaFeber's recipe for economic growth

In one of the most biased textbooks I have ever read, Walter LaFeber states the following in his America, Russia, and the Cold War:

5. Are the American people prepared for the post-Cold War world?
(...) The Soviet Union, after all, rotted from the inside out. On the other hand, Japan's and Germany's rise to economic power occurred because of their educated workforces, intelligent governmental guidance, ability to plan long-term and high savings rates (three to four times the rates of Americans) that catered money for investment rather than a towering consumer indebtedness.

Not a mention of free markets, only references to planning, guidance and having lots of intelligent people. If that's all it takes, then why exactly did the Soviet Union collapse? They had some of the best scientists in the world, free university education and a whole lot of planning. I guess their planning wasn't intelligent enough. The Soviet Union also had a high investment rate, with investments allocated by "intelligent" technocrats. And how did it turn out?

As for Japan and Germany, neither really managed to plan long-term. The Japanese government got so entangled in subsidizing its enterprises that when the time came to pull the plug, they couldn't, as a result of which Japan has had two lost decades. Germany has been liberalizing its economy precisely because some of the welfare state policies it adopted are not sustainable in the long run. When these two economies grew the fastest after the war, it was in large part thanks to catching up after being torn to pieces by years of war. Compared to the rest of the world, their economies were still overwhelmingly liberal (as in free). The fact is that both countries would have witnessed similar, maybe even much higher, growth rates if their governments had simply kept their hands off. This is the recipe that allowed the West to rise above the rest of the world in the first place, long before anyone even dared to mention "public education".

Praising education as some Holy Grail is dangerous; it sends governments on a wild-goose chase, as if educating the people of Africa somehow could bring about an economic miracle. Don't forget that our comprehensive public education system appeared relatively late, decades after we had shed ourselves of extreme poverty that so plagues the (un)developing world.

Church of Immorality

Vatican's record of immorality spans for a hefty 1700 years. These days theVatican is kept in check thanks to the fact that it happens to exist in the middle of a civilized world. Unlike people in the Middle East, we don't allow totalitarian and evil institutions to run the show.

One of the most distinguishing features of the Catholic Church is clerical celibacy which is based on the sick view on human sexuality presented in the Bible, the idea that sexuality is wicked (or should at least be considered a necessary evil) and should be suppressed.

Suppressing sexuality is of course as unnatural as it gets. The constant barrage of news stories exposing clerical paedophilia merely demonstrates this and that it is not worth trying(unless you're a pedophile, in which case you should consider castration). Don't get me wrong: it is not a bad thing that religious extremists refrain from participating in reproductive activities. If anything, clerical celibacy should be celebrated if it worked. It, however, does not.

Now that the Church is once again under paedophilia charges, it is acting exactly the way it's been acting for the past two millennia, with one exception. The history of the Church is filled with anti-Semitism and downright persecution of Jews but here, in the 21st century, the Church is now identifying with the people it has been persecuting for millennia.

And as for how the Church is acting like it's business as usual, well, now they're blaming sodomites for the rampant wave of paedophilia within the Church:

“Many psychologists and psychiatrists have shown that there is no link between celibacy and pedophilia but many others have shown, I have recently been told, that there is a relationship between homosexuality and pedophilia,” [Cardinal Tarcision Berdone] told a news conference in Santiago.

If there is a link between homosexuality and paedophilia, it is the same link that links Catholic priests to paedophilia: suppression of human sexuality. Rather ironic then that it's largely thanks to the Catholic Church that homosexuals have been forced to suppress their sexuality for two millennia now. Moreover, holding homosexuality responsible for paedophilia is like holding heterosexuality responsible for rape in general (well, sexuality is to blame but that's not a very fruitful argument). Apparently the Church considers the "sodomite card" useful now that they can no longer blame the Jews for everything.

So, the Catholic Church seems more than willing to continue its track record of immorality and depravity which, for a religious institution, is just business as usual.

Sosialismin ja kehitysavun runtelema Tansania

Kirjassa Presidentin ministeriö II (1970-1981) paneudutaan yhdessä alaluvussa Suomen kehitysyhteistyötoimintaan Tansaniassa, joka oli "tärkein Suomen kahdenkeskisen kehitysavun päävastaanottajamaista" 70-luvulla:

Pohjoismailla ja sosiaalidemokraateilla oli erityinen "ideologinen rakkaus" Tansaniaan. Nyereren pyrkimykset ja tavoitteet nähtiin "jaloina".

Ulkoasiainministeriön sinisilmäiset virkamiehet, lähinnä sosiaalidemokraatit, kannattivat kymmenien miljoonien markkojen hankkeita Tansaniassa. (Näiden virkamiesten joukossa oli myös suurlähettiläs Martti Ahtisaari.) Tansania oli tuolloin sitoutunut suunnitelmatalouteen ja "maailman uuteen talousjärjestykseen", jota myös Suomi kannatti. Lukuunottamatta Paul Samuelsonin kaltaisia, matemaattisen mallentamisen sokaisemia ekonomisteja, suunnitelmatalouden ongelmat olivat hyvin taloustieteen tiedossa. Tämä ei estänyt satojen miljoonien markkojen sysäämistä tähän(kin) afrikkalaiseen katastrofiin. Wikipedian mukaan Tansania muuttui muutamassa vuodessa Afrikan merkittävimmästä maataloustuotteiden viejästä Afrikan merkittävimmäksi maataloustuotteiden tuojaksi. Kollektivisointeja tehostettiin mm. polttamalla kyliä. Näin toimi diktaattori Nyerere, jonka tavoitteita vasemmistolaiset pitivät "jaloina".

Tässä siis vain yksi esimerkki ei ainoastaan kehitysavun hyödyttömyydestä, vaan myös siitä, miten häikäilemättömästi diktaattorit käyttävät kehitysapurahoja omien mielisairaiden projektiensa toteuttamiseen. Käytännössä mikä tahansa afrikkalainen valtio toimisi esimerkkinä tästä, mutta eipä näytä menevän suomalaiselle intelligentsialle kaaliin.

Kirjassa mainitaan vielä, että 70-luvulla "Tansania kuului maailman 25 köyhimmän maan joukkoon". Maailmanpankin mukaan Tansania on tänään maailman 23. köyhin maa. Aid well spent!

To finance its budget, the [Ecuadorean] government is likely to have to borrow more than $4 billion this year. Sine defaulting on a third of its foreign debt in December 2008, it has scoured the world for cash, without much success. It was late in paying legislators' salaries last month.

Hah! Another Latin American country exhibiting the wonders (and the impossibility) of building a welfare state at the expense of free-market capitalism (or without free-market capitalism). Like Venezuela, another Latin American country run by a socialist madman, Ecuador went on a spending spree when the price of oil was high. Oil revenue was then allocated to social spending, i.e., buying votes and turning people dependent on the government. Anti-West rhetoric and threats to private companies have not exactly helped government finances, unless you count Hugo Chávez's support, which is not really a good bet in the long run.

Rape in Finland - a Case of Welfare State Morality

Criminals thrive on the indulgence of society's understanding. -Ra's al Ghul

A 51-year-old policeman uses his badge to lure a 16-year-old runaway girl to his apartment where he then rapes her. Being a stupid piece of human trash, the "policeman" even takes pictures of her, pictures he then stores on his computer. He was given a two-year suspended sentence. Also, charges for misuse of an official position and violation of official duties were dismissed (he was off-duty at the time of the rape but that should be irrelevant).

This is not an exception to the rule. In Finland, this is the rule. Less than half of rape convictions result in any actual jail time and those who do serve time (a year or two) get away easily, considering the fact that our prisons are closer to hotels than actual prisons. The severity of a sentence has to do with your criminal background and the level of violence used during the rape. This is of course ludicrous. A couple of days ago a 30-ish man was given a six-month sentence for raping a 15-year-old. The reason why he has to spend any time in jail is because of his criminal background. Also, he wasn't even convicted of rape but of coercive sexual contact. Why? Because the level of violence involved was low. (Of course it was! How hard can it be to restrain a 15-year-old girl?)

What is going on? Nothing should compel our judges to hand out such lenient sentences and yet the practice is systematic. Maybe law students are forced to go through some kind of an operation before they graduate, an operation that removes their ability to separate just from unjust. This results in sympathizing with the offenders, the genetic trash that should be of no consequence to anyone. The welfare state has no respect for individual liberties and as such it fails to understand the concept of individual responsibility. According to the welfare ideology, the society made you and therefore you cannot be held fully responsible for your actions. By handing out lenient sentences the society puts a big part of the blame on the victim.

Kunniaväkivallasta tuontihyödyke

Se että niin sanottu kunniaväkivalta on yleistymässä Suomessa, ei ole yllättävää. Ilmiön vahvistumista on voinut odottaa sitä mukaa kuin tietyistä kulttuuritaustoista Suomeen saapuneiden ihmisten määrä on kasvanut. Huono kehitys on kuitenkin ollut nopeaa ja siksi hyvin huolestuttavaa. Muutama päivä sitten Yleisradion uutisissa asiaa kommentoinut maahanmuuttajanaisten tukihenkilö kertoi ilmiön lisääntyneen "valtavasti".

Kunniaväkivallan avulla pyritään turvaamaan suvun tai perheen arvovalta. Sen säilyttämiseksi käytettävä väkivalta kohdistuu useimmiten naisiin, joiden parisuhteiden katsotaan uhkaavan yhteisön kunniaa.

Länsimaista kulttuuria on kritisoitu siitä, että se hajottaa perinteisen perhemallin. Tämä on nimenomaan hyvä asia, sillä kyse on yksilön vapautumisesta ahdasmielisestä, kollektivistisesta traditiosta, jossa yksilön asema on pitää turpansa kiinni oli tilanne miten epämiellyttävä tahansa. Suvaitsevaisto tietenkin pitää tällaista primitiivistä kollektivismia hienona asiana, jota meidän hengellisesti köyhien ja materialististen suomalaistenkin tulisi tavoitella.

Pääkirjoituksessa tosin vähätellään islamin roolia kunniaväkivallassa. Islamin naiskäsitys antaa kuitenkin vapaat kädet miehille, jotka katsovat kunniansa tulleen loukatuksi ja päinvastoin kuin traditio, joka ei välttämättä sisällä minkäänlaista eksplisiittistä doktriinia, islam oikeuttaa kunniamurhat.

Keynes on reparations

Finished reading Keynes's The Economic Consequences of the Peace, published in 1920. A few notes:

-Keynes recommended that Germany should be made to pay no more than £2 billion in reparations. The actual size of the bill was initially settled at £24 billion, which Germany is still paying. The antagonists of the story are the French, who wanted Germany to bleed (going as far as insisting that German private property abroad should be expropriated), and Wilson, who was just too weak to resist the French. In fact, the book could be used to argue that France caused the Second World War.
-In retrospect, it seems that Keynes was wrong about the economic consequences of the peace. As the German economy grew in the '20s, it became more apparent that the problem with reparations was political and that Germany regained its status as an industrial powerhouse faster than expected (at least until the Crash of 1929). The reparations didn't ruin the economy but the psychological effects of the Treaty of Versailles were effectively used by the nazis to seize power. Before Versailles, Germans were led to believe by the Allies that peace would be built on Wilson's Fourteen Points. Because of French opposition and Wilson's weakness, it didn't turn out that way.
-Two numbers struck me, as they always do. Germany had a population of nearly 70 million in 1914, before the outbreak of the war. Russia had a population of 150 million around the same time. Today Germany has just 80 million and Russia 140 million inhabitants. To get a better picture of the effects of the two world wars on the populations of these two countries, compare their demographic story to that of the United States which had around 100 million inhabitants in 1914 and has 310 million inhabitants today.
-Keynes recommended arranging some huge international loan to help Europe rebuild. Keynes argued that in practice the lender would have to be the United States. This didn't come to fruition but this is exactly what happened after the Second World War in the form of the Marshall Plan. Also, apart from the Soviet Union, the Allies turned out to be far more lenient toward Germany after the Second, at least after initially contemplating plans to turn Germany into a cripple. (The onset of the Cold War surely contributed to this.)

Avatar: Cameron's manifesto

One word defines this film: naivety. In James Cameron's world, white men are evil capitalists who're willing to slaughter innocent natives or sacrifice colonists and marines for a profit. The natives are of course depicted as beings living in total harmony (even symbiosis, as in the film) with nature, which is how the left views tribes living in rainforests and on the prairie. In fact, harmony is an understatement: Cameron goes to great lenghts to push some sort of a Gaia hypothesis.

Of course, I wouldn't use the word harmony to describe the relationship some natives are perceived to have with their environment in our world. In reality, the relationship is one of oppression, based on keeping the native population in check. This also explains why natives (be that the Na'vi in Avatar or some bushmen in Africa) have little use for precious minerals lying beneath their "sacred" lands.

To be more specific, the relationship with nature is one of death, famine and an endless stream of deadly diseases. The population size is kept constant so that there's no need to build megacities, not to mention spaceships. It is only after this "harmony" is broken that man is able to break free from the oppression of his environment and of his tribe where individuals are delegated to roles they were chosen for by their elders (or some imaginary beings).

This oppression, or harmony, is not anyone's choice. It's merely a sad state of affairs. An individual wishes to preserve his or hers genetic heritance. Pumping out as many babies as you can, hoping that one or two of them reaches maturity is not ideal considering the opportunity costs of being nothing but a birth machine which is why we desire to improve our living standards so that we can settle for a smaller number of children. To get around this oppression, we discover ways to exploit our surroundings, to cultivate land. This results in production surpluses. We end up having countries instead of small and isolated tribal areas which are far from ideal from a genetic point of view; problems such as inbreeding depression result from low levels of genetic variation.

Since living in that state of oppression is not a choice, it's only stupid for people to perceive this primitive way of life as something that is much closer to man's true nature. It's usually echoed that Western people have lost their touch with that something magical in the dirt and have embraced techno-consumer culture instead. Of course, that "something magical" is nothing but ignorance. Having lost this ignorance does not make us Westerners any poorer but richer, both materially and spiritually. Science and magic cannot co-exist. Pockets of superstition and oppression such as Indian tribes or Islamic neighborhoods cannot exist where the West rules.

And then there's imperialism. We are to believe that Westerners only brought tears and sorrow to the darkest corners of the world while in reality we brought technology, education and, ironically, the means (agricultural technology, food aid and modern medicine) to maintain surplus populations in 3rd world countries, populations that would not exist without Western aid. (This wouldn't be such a bad thing if 3rd world economies were liberalized in order to end this dependency. Aid, however, only provides an excuse not to liberalize.) Of course, property should not be taken by force (although property rights of extraterrestrials have not been defined: would we consider aliens as animals, comparable to dogs and cats instead of humans?) as in the movie, not when it's already being utilized by the natives.

Even worse, in the film imperialism is mixed with modern American politics. America never was an imperial nation (except for their sole possession, the Philippines). The film makes references to America's post-9/11 foreign policy, mentioning well-known concepts such as "pre-emptive strikes" and "shock & awe". In the movie, marines are used to further commercial interests, pushing the ridiculously simplistic view that the Iraq War is/was about oil. This only hurts the credibility of the movie and it's totally unnecessary. (The same thing happened with V for Vendetta.)

As a 3D experience the first half of the movie was incredible but the story (its premise was copied directly from Unreal) turned out to be so repulsive, predictable and naive that I was in great pains watching the second half. No wonder: Cameron's political views have been well known since at least Aliens but while Aliens is a brilliant movie with subtle reflections on human nature, Avatar is an in-your-face type of political manifesto.

Things got interesting when these students were subsequently given $6 for an economic task and asked to share it with an unknown partner. The students who had purchased products in the green store, it turned out, were far less generous with the $6 than students who had merely been exposed to the green products.

A subsequent experiment pushed things even further. Students were again asked to shop in a green or a conventional store. They were then put through an experiment where they had the opportunity to earn extra money by cheating — even to steal money from an envelope left in the room. Consistent with the previous experiment, participants who had purchased from the green store were significantly more likely to cheat and to steal than participants who purchased from the conventional store.

I'd draw a different conclusion than the one in the first paragraph. I don't think that buying green products makes you act like a jerk. Instead, it's the way the left-wing brain has been wired that makes you act like a criminal, a mentality of total disregard for the property and freedom of others. It doesn't surprise me in the least that a green person would steal the money from an envelope. These are the same people who see nothing wrong with high marginal tax rates. These are the same people who think it's acceptable to break store windows and burn cars of private individuals while demonstrating against government policies.

Ever wondered how little feminists appreciate the liberty of women to choose their own occupation? I haven't. It's common for these types of socialists to have such a high opinion of themselves as to be able to make decisions about how individuals are supposed to live their lives. Another feminist trait is the perception that whenever a woman chooses to be a model, a pornstar or a prostitute instead of a chief executive she has somehow betrayed other women and the feminist cause, as if individual women are worth something only as members of their respective genders and not as individuals acting on their own.

Also, this is a gross violation of state's appropriate role in the economy. What if she had attacked retailers, suddenly telling people that they should not buy anything and just let the retailers starve?

Kaleva-lehti spekuloi, että ääri-islamin uhka Sveitsissä kasvoi minareettikiellon myötä. Jutussa on paljon muutakin huomionarvoista:

Vastoin kaikkia mielipidemittauksia maan äänestäjät hyväksyivät perustuslain muutoksen, jonka mukaan maan moskeijoihin ei saa rakentaa minareetteja. Tulos oli selvä: 57,5 prosenttia äänestäneistä kannatti kieltoa, samoin 22 kantonia 26:sta.
Tulos löi ällikällä siksikin, että maan hallitus ja lähes kaikki suuret puolueet kampanjoivat minareettikieltoa vastaan. Kieltoa ajoivat siirtolaisvastainen Sveitsin kansanpuolue sekä oikeistolainen pikkupuolue Federaali demokratialiitto.

Sinänsä äänestystuloksen poikkeaminen ennakkoon tehdyistä mielipidemittauksista ei ole mikään ihme, sillä nykyisessä älyllisessä ilmapiirissä on vaikea esiintyä islaminvastaisena. Äänestyspaikoilla kukaan ei kuitenkaan ole kysymässä sinulta, miten äänestit. Se, että kaikki suuret puolueet kampanjoivat kieltoa vastaan, kertoo lähinnä siitä, miten mainstream-puolueiden maahanmuuttopoliittinen linja poikkeaa rankastikin äänestäjien todellisista, mutta toistaiseksi osittain piilotetuista, preferensseistä. Muutenkaan islam ei sveitsiläisten elämässä näy. Eurooppalaisia kavahduttavia, naiset päästä varpaisiin peittäviä burka-asujakaan ei maan katukuvassa juuri tapaa. Moskeijoita maassa on 160, niissä yhteensä neljä minareettia. Sharia-lakia ei ole vaadittu voimaan.

Mitä tästä nyt sitten pitäisi päätellä? Että sveitsiläisten kannattaisi vielä hieman odottaa, että islam on pysyvästi juurruttanut asemansa sveitsiläisessä yhteiskunnassa, ja vasta sitten lähteä ottamaan vauvanaskelia islamilaisen uhan torjumiseksi? Sveitsi ja esimerkiksi Itävalta ovat huomattavasti paremmassa asemassa kuin esim. Ruotsi ja Ranska nimenomaan siksi, että sveitsiläiset ja itävaltalaiset ovat suhteellisen ajoissa lähteneet vastustamaan yhteiskuntiensa islamisoitumista.

Olennainen kysymys äänestyksen jälkeen on se, ampuivatko sveitsiläiset omaan jalkaansa. Lähiajat näyttävät, oliko kyseessä lyhytnäköinen voitto. On täysin mahdollista, että äänestystulos päinvastoin toimii herkästi roihahtavana sytykkeenä maan ja maailman islamilaisille uskonkiihkoilijoille.

Relativismi, passivoituminen ja yleinen heikkous ovat olleet sodanjälkeisen Euroopan ongelmia tähänkin asti ja ovat nimenomaan syinä islamin hipumiselle osaksi eurooppalaista yhteiskuntaa. Ja jos nyt todellakin on niin, että islamilaisen terrorismin uhka tämän kiellon myötä kasvaa, niin ehkä kannattaisi miettiä, mistä niitä maahanmuuttajia kannattaa tänne tuoda, ja että eikö islaminvastaisuudessa sittenkin olisi jotain perää.

Toinen vaihtoehto olisi ollut lähettää maailman 1,3 miljardille islamilaiselle myönteinen viesti uskontojen rinnakkainelosta.

Muslimeja tuskin voisi vähempää kiinnostaa jokin uskontojen rinnakkaiselo. Päinvastoin kuin lännessä, muslimimaissa ei tunneta uskonnonvapautta. Länsimainen liberaali ei myöskään pidä islamilaista kulttuuria yhtä arvokkaana kuin länsimaista kulttuuria eikä näin ollen pidä hyväksyttävänä, että sharia-lain dominoimia yhteisöjä ilmaantuu keskellä sivistynyttä Eurooppaa. Tällaiselle rinnakkaiselolle ei ole tarvetta. Islam voi elää ainoastaan selvässä alistussuhteessa liberaaliin yhteiskuntaan nykyaikaisen kristinuskon tavoin. Tähän asti islamisteille on tosin viestitetty, että eurooppalainen yhteiskunta on muokattavissa alisteiseksi islamille.

Ei ole Suomen armeijassa helppoa:

Kaksi varusmiestä on tuomittu sakkoihin alokkaiden simputtamisesta Jääkäriprikaatissa, Yle kertoi tiistaina. Lapin käräjäoikeus määräsi alikersanttien maksettavaksi 30 päiväsakkoa eli yhteensä 180 euroa.

Kiroilevat alikersantit olivat vaatineet alokkaita tekemään tupailmoituksia sängyn alla tai sängyllä selällään maaten. Ilmoituksia oli määrätty tekemään myös seinän takaa.

Pari asiallista kommenttia Hesarin uutisen keskustelupalstalta:

"Kylläpä on tapahtunut kamalia! Ihan on laitettu sängylle makaamaan ja KIROILTU ALOKKAIDEN KUULLEN!!! Kai paikalle on jo lähetetty kriisiapua ja kaikki vapautettu palveluksesta? Missä viipyy Vanhasen anteeksipyyntö?"

Tässä on itseasiassa kaksi hyvää argumenttia asevelvollisuutta vastaan. Ensinnäkin, vapaaehtoisuus kitkisi armeijasta kaikenlaiset herkkähipiäiset, asepalvelukseen kelpaamattomat yksilöt. Toiseksi, meininki armeijassa on todella lapsellista. Aliupseerit ovat kuin kakaroita ja upseerien älyä joutuu jatkuvasti epäilemään, kun kaikki pitää aina tehdä vaikeimman kautta (missä ei tietenkään sinänsä ole mitään ihmeellistä, onhan armeija valtion monopoli). Armeija ei todellakaan tee pojista miehiä, vaan se tekee miehen aluista poikia. Minun on vaikea nähdä armeijassa mitään mekanismia, jonka avulla normaaliälyinen varusmies miehistyisi sen 6-12 kuukautta kestävän leikkikerhon aikana. Toisaalta jos lähdetään siitä, että asevelvollisuus pitää säilyttää, niin tällöin olisi tietenkin kaikkien kannalta parempi, että tällaisesta "simputuksesta" ei rangaistaisi, sillä se tekisi asepalveluksen entistä tylsemmäksi. (Todellinen simputtaminen on tietenkin asia erikseen.)

A pension worth 4000€ a month

A Finnish green party MP Janina Andersson will not seek re-election in 2011, meaning she'll be quitting after 16 years in the job. Then she will be eligible for something called an MP's readjustment pension (any representative who quits after seven years in the job is eligible for this pension) which means she can cash in around 4000€ a month even though she's only 40 years old.

Now, she says she will apply for these benefits in case she can't find a job but of course anyone with her work history and connections could find a job. Also, she says she'd like to spend more time with her kids instead of working full-time but that merely begs the question that if raising kids is that lucrative, where do I sign up? The craziest thing is that in this article, she actually compares the 4000€ a month pension to ordinary unemployment benefits. Even if she were to consume only half of the benefits, she could be a millionaire in her eighties.

Of course she's not responsible for legislating the readjustment pension and in all likelihood she won't be drawing this special pension from the age of 40 until she's eligible for "normal" pension. But the system is rotten and it needs to be said out loud. So, can we get a competent, ethical MP to stand up and call for the abolition of this ludicrous special pension?

Nobel & Americans

As I predicted a few weeks back, at least the vast majority of Americans see Obama getting the Nobel for what it is worth, a low attempt by irrelevant foreign powers to interfere with America's politics. A respectable 36% of Democrats did not think Obama deserved the prize so "only" 59% of American Democrats are totally insane.

Of course polarization may serve the interests of the Democratic party because instead of focusing on making themselves look relevant again, the Republicans have instead opted for going insane, making sure that no one will care about them when the election day hits.

Muslim immigration leads to White flight

According to this news piece, native Finns are taking their children out of schools with significant immigrant populations (mainly Muslims, of course). Not just that, but they're also willing to move to have their children put in another school. This will further erode the areas with significant immigrant populations as the population actually capable of paying taxes moves out, leaving behind only those consuming welfare services. And not just that, but the demand for these welfare services increases as the amount of immigrants does. This is what happened in the United States as a result of desegregation. White Americans responded by moving elsewhere, leaving cities like Detroit to rot. Add rent controls to the mix and you'll end up with ghettos. This flight is taking place in cities across Europe and it has, in just a few years, landed in Finland and is now destroying the ridiculously naive "people's home" state, first conceived in Sweden.

This will also reflect on educational attainments. Immigrants tend to have much lower test scores than natives. Also, the natives will suffer if teachers are forced to devote more and more time on immigrant pupils. As I have argued before, one reason why Finland does well in international comparisons (the so-called "PISA" test) is because of our homogeneous population. This also means that our education system cannot be "copied", i.e., no lessons can be drawn from our system unless our demographic structure is copied too.

So, what is happening is that westerners are moving elsewhere as their neighborhoods are being invaded by alien, collectivist cultures where ethnic and religious indentities matter more than the individual. People do care about what is happening but few dare to speak out because of the intellectual climate where those criticizing immigration policies are quickly labeled as racists. So, don't expect anyone to do anything. The trend will continue until we're on the verge of a collapse.

Obamalle Nobel

Vain yhdeksän kuukautta presidenttinä toiminut Barack Obama on voittanut Nobelin rauhanpalkinnon. Samalla koko palkinto menettänee uskottavuutensa kymmenien miljoonien amerikkalaisten silmissä. Kaleva-lehti on toista mieltä:

Sosialistiksi ja kommunistiksi haukuttu Obama saanee arvostelijat hiljenemään, ainakin hetkeksi. Heidän on pakko huomata ainakin jossain määrin se, että vaikka kotimaassa kaikki näyttää menevän pieleen, niin ulkomailla Obama on yhä erittäin korkeassa arvossa ja hänen linjaansa uskotaan.

Onpa typerä analyysi. Obaman vastustajat lähinnä näkevät tämän ulkovaltojen puuttumisena Yhdysvaltain sisäpolitiikkaan. Republikaanien kupissa ei paljoa paina, miten paljon norjalaiset, ruotsalaiset tai ranskalaiset Amerikasta pitävät. Nobel-palkinnot eivät todellakaan ole tehneet Al Goresta tai Jimmy Carterista mitenkään pidettyja, vaan monet republikaanit näkevät erityisesti jälkimmäisen lähinnä maanpetturina.

Samalla palkinto on läimäys päin presidentti George W. Bushin kasvoja, vaikka sitä ei sanottukaan aivan suoraan.

Juuri näin. Tällä eleellä osoitettiin, että koko muu maailma on demokraattipuolueen takana, mikä lähinnä lisää republikaanien ponnisteluja Obaman sisäpolitiikan vastustamiseksi.

Pitäisi jossain vaiheessa kirjoittaa enemmän finanssikriisistä, mutta nyt tyydyn referoimaan tätä surullisen koomista uutista:

Britanniassa suunnitellaan lakia, joka velvoittaisi pankit myöntämään lainoja köyhien asuinalueiden asukkaille. Mallia haetaan Yhdysvalloissa jo 1970-luvulla käyttöön otetusta laista.

Ei se demokratia nyt oikein näytä toimivan, kun populistiset, lyhytnäköiset poliitikot tekevät kaikkensa kalastaakseen ääniä. Aivan kuin implisiittiset takuut rahoituslaitoksille, yleisön talletustakuut, alhaiset korot ja ylläolevan kaltaiset lait eivät olisi jo tehneet tarpeeksi aiheuttaakseen sen, että pankit sankoin joukoin pyrkivät laajentamaan luotonantoaan räjähdyspisteeseen saakka. Seuraavan kriisin välttämiseksi on lähinnä pyritty lisäämään rahoitusmarkkinoiden sääntelyä ilman, että oltaisiin puututtu niihin perversseihin insentiiveihin, jotka kriisiin johtivat.

Now that Rajendra K. Pachauri, some IPCC hotshot, is marketing John Kenneth Galbraith, an economist who died some years back, it's quite fitting to post here something I wrote as part of an academic writing course last spring:

Galbraithian Ideas - a Renaissance

John Kenneth Galbraith, an American-Canadian economist who died in 2006, was and is better known for his books than for any actual research on economic matters. This is why his reputation is two-sided: On the one hand his ideas are popular especially on the left of the political spectrum but on the other hand as an economist he was not very remarkable. Paul Krugman, a Nobel-winning economist, was not happy with Galbraith’s apparent mainstream influence, calling Galbraith a “policy entrepreneur”. This, however, was in 1994 and anyone who has been reading Krugman’s NYTimes blog lately has surely noticed how Krugman now seems to have a more favorable opinion of Galbraith or at least of his opinions. The initial friction never seemed to make much sense: after all, both Galbraith and Krugman are Keynesian economists.

An interesting paper by L.A. Duhs poses a relevant question: Did Krugman come to accept Galbraith’s views as an economist or as a columnist with a political agenda? After all, Krugman had criticized Galbraith for offering “easy solutions where there are likely to be none” (Duhs 2). Is Krugman now imitating Galbraith by offering simple solutions to complex problems? A particularly interesting section in the paper explores how Krugman first criticized Galbraith’s vision of a future America in The New Industrial State where big corporations exercise monopoly power and act as price makers, i.e. are able to set prices due to the absence of competition. However, based on Krugman’s NYTimes columns it seems that he would now agree with Galbraith on issues of corporate power. We are left with an interesting question: Has Krugman progressed or regressed into a Galbraithian? (Duhs 4–6)

Economists, such as Milton Friedman, who have traditionally been associated with the political right, did not think much of Galbraith’s economic views either (Lockett 3). In a NYTimes blog post Barry Gewen observes that “When Milton Friedman’s stock is high, John Kenneth Galbraith’s is low, and vice versa.” At the moment it seems that Friedman’s (who once called Galbraith “a missionary seeking converts”) stock is low and Galbraith’s name is experiencing a renaissance. A new school of economics called behavioral economics which attempts to take a more “realistic” approach toward consumer behavior, expresses the view that consumers are not rational and that it should be up to economists to study how consumers actually behave (Duhs 18). This is in contrast with some neoclassical models which assume that utility-maximizing individuals are rational. Galbraith, a Keynesian, argued against this neoclassical assumption and against the assumption that, left to their own devices, markets would always strike a balance. In The New Industrial State he explained how market failures (which often result from government action) can lead to disproportionate corporate power. In The Great Crash, 1929 Galbraith criticized businesses for speculative, short-sighted behavior.

All these ideas are now resurfacing in a way that appears more populist than scientific. This is why it is important to remember that not much of Galbraith’s writings were based on hard research.

Immigrants kill patients? Or the welfare model?

Mikko Ellilä reports that "Immigrant doctors kill Finnish patients" (originally covered by Iltalehti). Patients are having problems explaining their problems to doctors because there's a language barrier now. Because of a shortage of Finnish doctors, many immigrants have been hired as doctors lately. This is causing problems, some of them life-threatening. For example, a patient was given cough medicine when he was in fact having a heart failure. According to the news piece, these problems are increasing.

But this isn't an immigration-related problem; rather, it is a fundamental flaw of the welfare model. In the absence of market-determined prices, supply and demand are prevented from adjusting to an equilibrium (market clearing) level. In a market economy a shortage of doctors should lead to an increase in their salaries which in turn should encourage more people to seek medical education.

A common argument against the free-market solution is that people cannot afford market prices. But people forget that their disposable incomes are being eroded by the welfare model. When the government takes more than 50% of the money you make, it is no wonder people feel poor.

Muslim women and burqa - not free to choose

Barack Obama in Cairo:

"it is important for Western countries to avoid impeding Muslim citizens from practising religion as they see fit - for instance, by dictating what clothes a Muslim woman should wear." (The Economist.)

The problem with this idea is that the Islamic world (including Islamic enclaves within the Western world) does not recognize the right to practise religion as individuals see fit. Rejecting Islam is punishable by death in many countries including, in practice, western countries. Burqa (the thing that covers Muslim women from top to bottom) is not something Muslim women choose to wear but something they wear because they're afraid of the consequences of not wearing it. Freedom means freedom from physical violence or the threat of it. Freedom does not mean freedom to subjugate individuals in the name of religious nonsense.

Banning the burqa (which goes against the principle of individual liberty) should be viewed as a compromise: Because the Muslim world is nowhere near mature enough, we should assume that a woman wearing a burqa is not doing so out of her own free will. If banning the burqa means that some subjugated women will simply be forced to stay at home instead of walking outside in a burqa, then this should be taken as a call for further action against Islam in the West. Banning the burqa would be a violation of individual liberties only in a world where Muslim women are truly free from other Muslims.

Why naturism/nudism is not natural

Naturists/nudists often claim that their way of life is more natural, that being nude is about "returning to nature." I'm going to show that this isn't the case, that the so-called naturists are in fact acting in a way that's fundamentally against nature or, more specifically, against man's place in nature.

One reason why many perceive nakedness as natural is because, well, if nature (or some supernatural being) had "wanted" humans to wear something, we'd all be covered in fur. But this isn't so: the only reason why we never evolved fur is precisely because we were able to manufacture and wear clothes. Had we not had this ability - the ability to use tools according to our relatively superior mental capabilities - we'd have needed fur to survive, at least in this environment. We were never meant to walk around naked. Our ability to make things compensates for our deficiencies such as our weak physical strength or agility. We adapt by thinking.

In other words, had there existed "naturists" in these latitudes a few thousands years ago, they'd have simply died out. So much for being natural! Another ironic feature of modern Western naturism is that it's been made possible by technology. Heating, among other things, makes it possible for people to walk around naked in their homes.

I really don't care if people choose to make themselves look ridiculous by adopting a naturist lifestyle, but some people drag their children into it and that's what bothers me. Of course they argue that there's nothing sexual about their perversion, but this is just wishful thinking. Their children, teenage girls most worryingly, are exposed to lustful eyes.

There are of course other, more social arguments against naturism while the above dealt with biological aspects. Also, different environments favor different traits, which means that there are environments where wearing clothes is a disadvantage.

Detroitissa viime kauden pelannut tshekkikiekkoilija Jiri Hudler on siirtymässä Venäjän KHL-liigaan. Ylen uutisen kommenttiosastossa nimimerkki Angels of LA kirjoitti:

Hieno juttu, että venäläisiltä löytyy nyt resursseja laittaa ylimieliselle NHL:lle kapuloita rattaisiin. Euroopasta on aina ryövätty huippupelaajat ja lupaavimmat lahjakkuudet naurettavilla rahasummilla Pohjois-Amerikkaan, milloin mihinkin farmiliigaan

Onpas tosi hienoa, että Venäjän umpimätä poliittinen koneisto on rasvannut venäläistä urheilua öljyrahoilla! Pitäisikö Suomessakin valtion kansallistaa yksityistä omaisuutta ja edistää paikallishallintojen korruptiota, jotta puolityhjille kiekkohalleille voitaisiin raahata miljoonia dollareita maksavia pelaajia?

Muutenkin on naurettavaa kuunnella joidenkin kiekkoeksperttien analyysia siitä, miten Venäjällä on jääkiekkoon liittyvät asiat "tehty oikein" viime vuosien aikana. Näille eksperteille jääkiekon tukeminen on jokin itseisarvo, vailla mitään vaihtoehtoiskustannuksia. Minun nähdäkseni jääkiekossa tehdään asiat oikein silloin, kun tarjonta vastaa yleisön kysyntää, mutta ei silloin, kun tuetaan sadoilla miljoonilla ruplilla toimintaa, josta kuluttajat eivät ole halukkaita maksamaan. Miksi siis Angels of LA puhuu "naurettavista rahasummista" viitatessaan NHL:ssä maksettaviin palkkoihin? NHL:n palkat sentään ovat lähtöisin yleisön halukkuudesta maksaa.

Vai edistääkö jääkiekon tukeminen hyvinvointia, mikä tietenkin oikeuttaisi kaikenlaisen totalitarismin? Ehkä Neuvostoliittokin teki jääkiekon suhteen "asiat oikein", kun miesten maajoukkueen pelaajavat harjoittelivat 11 kuukautta vuodessa eristyksissä perheistään.

Pohjoisamerikkalaisen jääkiekon ystävänä en voi toivoa muuta kuin että KHL romahtaisi omaan megalomaanisuuteensa. Toivoisin myös pelaajien boikotoivan kyseistä liigaa.

Zimbabwesta afrikkalainen mallimaa

Zimbabwesta on tullut afrikkalainen utopia valkoisten imperialistien jälkeläisten jätettyä maan:

Maan uusjako [eli eurooppalaisperäisten maatilojen siirtäminen afrikkalaisille] syöksi Zimbabwen talouden sekasortoon. Valkoiset suurtilat tuottivat yli puolet Zimbabwen vientituloista ja työllistivät satojatuhansia mustia.
Nyt Zimbabwe joutuu tuomaan ruokaa ulkomailta, sillä oma ruoantuotanto on romahtanut.

Tähän ei voi muuta sanoa kuin että sitä saa mitä tilaa. Nyt olisi myös oiva tilaisuus lakkauttaa kaikki Zimbabween menevä kehitysapu ihan vaan siitä syystä, että kannustimet omien asioiden kuntoon hoitamiseen saataisiin paikalleen.

Mitä muuten tulee maatalouteen, EU nähtävästi pyrkii syventämään Zimbabwen ongelmia entisestään dumppaamalla subventoituja maataloustuotteita maailmanmarkkinoille:

Maitotuotteiden alhaiset maailmanmarkkinahinnat ovat painaneet tuottajien tuloja niin, että EU:ssa ollaan ottamassa käyttöön jo kertaalleen romukoppaan heitetyt juuston vientituet.

Niiden avulla EU:n sisämarkkinoilla kummitteleva "juustovuori" saadaan heivattua yli rajojen toisten niskaan.

Kenellekään ei nähtävästi ole tullut mieleen, että maataloustukien lakkauttaminen myös lakkauttaisi ylijäämätuotannon.

Netanyahu said the right things

Israeli Prime Minister Binyami Netanyahu made some important points in his major speech. Anyone interested in discussing the conflict in a civilized way should first acknowledge its root cause: the Arab refusal to recognize the state of Israel. Netanyahu specifies by reminding that it was the Jews who accepted and the Palestinian Arabs who overwhelmingly rejected the partition plan of 1947 or any proposal that'd have established a Jewish state of any kind in the Holy land. He also states that violence against Jews in Palestine began long before a Jewish soldier set a foot on West Bank.

But the big news is Netanyahu's willingness to see the birth of a Palestinian state assuming it is demilitarized. Understandably, this is in Israel's interests. Israel cannot afford to have a sovereign state next to it that threatens her very existence like Gaza, a terrorist state that supports and is supported by Hezbollah and Iran. Without a military Palestine would not be able to establish military pacts with Israel's enemies. Of course this isn't a very pragmatic proposal since the Palestinians would never agree to demilitarize. That is their problem, however. It's their society that has been on the verge of collapse for years now.

Netanyahu slams the silly idea that Palestinian refugees should have a right to return to Israel. Such a right would only mean slowly turning Israel into a non-Jewish state quite likely ruled by Islamic laws. As for Jerusalem, Netanyahu says it should remain a part of Israel, a united city that tolerates all religions. This is much better than allowing Jerusalem to be turned into a city where atheism and homosexuality is punishable by death.

As for the settlements in the West Bank, Israel is in no rush to leave although Netanyahu doesn't support expanding the settlements. Netanyahu notes that their Gaza withdrawal was for nothing. It did not stop violence, but merely turned Gaza into a Hamas-controlled entity that fires rockets into Israel on an almost daily basis. In other words: the assumption that disbanding the West Bank settlements would bring peace is based on nothing. Israel is done with concessions that only lead to more demands and violence against Israelis.

Moreover, there can be no peace and no Palestinian state until there's a "public, binding, unequivocal Palestinian recognition of Israel as the nation state of the Jewish people" and that the Palestinian people must decide "between Hamas and peace".

Meanwhile in the United States, former President Jimmy Carter has asked the Obama administration to remove Hamas from the American list of terrorist groups. It seems that Hamas certainly has a way to appreciate Carter's pro-Palestinian stance:

a Palestinian source told FOX News that the group had discovered two roadside bombs planted near a crossing between Israel and Gaza on a path Carter's convoy took to meet with the group's leaders. According to the source, the bombs were intended to hit Carter's vehicle as he exited Gaza.

Kilpailuvirasto ei vastusta Yle-maksua:

"Emme tyrmää mediamaksua. Mielestämme kaikissa maksutavoissa on ongelmia, mutta paras olisi suora budjettirahoitus."

Miten ihmeessä budjettirahoitus olisi kilpailun kannalta paras maksutapa? Miksi kilpailuvirasto ei tyrmää mediamaksua? Eikö se, että kotitaloudet pakotetaan vuosittain maksamaan tietty rahasumma yhdelle firmalle, muttei tämän firman kilpailijoille, rajoita kilpailua vakavasti?

Kilpailuvirastolla olisi kerrankin ollut tilaisuus pysyä nimelleen ja tehtävälleen uskollisena ja osoittaa hieman selkärankaa tyrmäämällä välittömästi kaikki muut rahoitusvaihtoehdot paitsi vapaaehtoisuuteen perustuvan rahoituksen eli Ylen yksityistämisen.

Äänestämättömyydestä

Muutama liberaali on näin parlamenttivaalien aikaan jälleen mainostamassa sitä, miten he eivät meinaa äänestää. Sillä ei tietenkään ole sinänsä mitään väliä, jättääkö kourallinen blogaavia liberaaleja äänestämättä, mutta vaarana on, että "ei kannata äänestää" -ideasta muodostuu liberaalien ja heidän potentiaalisten kannattajien keskuudessa leviävä meemi, joka johtaa liberaalien eristäytymiseen entisestään, mahdollisesti hyvin pitkiksi ajoiksi. Liberaalit ovat siis innolla tekemässä itsestään merkityksettömiä. Mitä tapahtui pragmaattisuudelle?

Demokratiassa asioista päätetään äänestämällä. Tietenkin mielipiteitä muokkaamalla voidaan pyrkiä muuttamaan yhteiskuntaa omalle ideologialle suotuisammaksi tehokkaammin kuin sillä merkityksettömällä henkilökohtaisella äänellä, mutta tällöinkin blogipostaus, lehtiartikkeli tai muu vastaava kääntyy todelliseksi poliittiseksi voimaksi vasta äänestettäessä. On hieman typerää ensin pyrkiä vakuuttamaan ihmiset liberalismin hienoudesta ja sitten mainostaa, että ei kannata äänestää. Jos äänestäminen ei ole se, joka loppupeleissä ratkaisee, niin mikä on? Vallankumous?

When it comes culture, America has been a world leader for a very long time. Culture is flourishing in America because it's been left alone. As any liberty-minded would agree, no authority should dictate which art is superior to others. But there are people who believe that some art is objectively better and thus everyone should be forced to support it for their own good. This is either elitism or just plain selfishness (usually disguised as elitism).

When the National Endowment for the Arts was awarded an extra $50m (£31.4m) of public money in President Obama’s fiscal stimulus package, it was denounced as wasteful spending that would do nothing to lift the economy.

If this is not wasteful spending, then what is? Special interests are going to have a ball under the Obamas.

EU-maiden palkkaeroista

Ylen eurovaalikoneen mukaan minulle sopivin ehdokas olisi Riikka Railimo. Hän kuitenkin kirjoitti blogissaan tällaista:

Kannatan vahvasti tuota EU:n sisäistä liikkumisvapautta, mahdollisuutta työskennellä ja opiskella ilman suurta paperisotaa ja lupamenettelyjä. Olen itsekin tuota mahdollisuutta käyttänyt moneen otteeseen. Mutta mitä on vaikea ymmärtää, että samasta työstä maksetaan eri suuruista palkkaa, riippuen siitä, mistä EU-maasta olet kotoisin. Eikö tulisi olla päivänselvää, ettei tuollainen menettely kuulu enää 2000-luvulle?

Ensinnäkin, hintatasot vaihtelevat EU:n sisällä; kaikki EU-maathan eivät edes kuulu euroalueeseen. Toiseksi, työvoiman hinta vaihtelee (lakisääteisten seikkojen lisäksi) nimenomaan siksi, että Riikan hehkuttamaa liikkumisvapautta ei käytetä tarpeeksi hyväksi. Täydellisesti toimivilla markkinoilla työvoima menisi aina sinne, missä työstä saa parhaan korvauksen. Tämä kuitenkin lisäisi työvoiman tarjontaa alueella, mikä taas johtaisi palkkatason alenemiseen. Toisin sanoen, täydellisesti toimivilla markkinoilla hinnat konvergoituvat arbitraasin seurauksena. Unionissa työvoima liikkuu jäsenmaiden välillä jonkin verran, mutta huomattavasti vähemmän kuin esimerkiksi Yhdysvalloissa eri osavaltioiden välillä. Konvergoitumista ei tapahdu.

Rasistiset viharikokset poimitaan poliisin tiedostoista ensimmäiseksi.

Viharikokset ovat yleistyneet huomattavasti netin myötä ja verkkoon on syntynyt samanmielisten viharyhmiä, arvioi sisäministeriön kansliapäällikkö Ritva Viljanen.

Mielenkiintoista, tullaanko tätä soveltamaan lähes pelkästään valkoisiin heteromiehiin, vai lasketaanko ei-muslimeihin kohdistunut jihad viharikokseksi. Muualla Euroopassa rasistinen rikollisuus on kasvavissa määrin nimenomaan muslimien toimeenpanemaa. Huomatkaa myös eksplisiittinen maininta nettirasisteista. Rasismihan ei ole Suomessa laitonta, joten lieneeköhän tässä yritys hiljalleen tehdä siitä laitonta?

SAK:n uusi uljas minimipalkka

SAK haluaa nostaa miminipalkan 1500:aan euroon. Vasta pari viikkoa sitten ihmettelin vasemmistolaisten ajamaa, kannustimia tuhoavaa ja työllisyyttä heikentävää työmarkkinapolitiikkaa. Hulluudelle ei nähtävästi loppua löydy.

Kuten tässä blogissa on jo noin miljoonaan kertaan todettu, hinnan kohottaminen tasapainohinnan yläpuolelle vähentää kysyntää. Minimipalkan korotus ei tietenkään välttämättä lisää työttömyyttä, jos korotus on vaatimaton. Yhdysvalloissa minimipalkkaa korotettiin hiljattain hieman yli viidestä dollarista hieman yli seitsemään dollariin. Inflaatiosta johtuen reaalinen korotus oli kuitenkin vaatimaton. Tästä huolimatta jopa vaatimaton viiden dollarin minimipalkka (mitattuna tämän päivän rahassa) sulkee ihmisiä työmarkkinoiden ulkopuolelle. Minimipalkan täytyisi olla todella alhainen, jotta se ei lisäisi työttömyyttä.

Toisaalta inflaatio on tehnyt ja tekee työvoimasta halvempaa, mutta tämä ei tarkoita, että työttömyyttä voitaisiin hoitaa inflaatiolla (kuten keynesiläisen talouspolitiikan aikoina tehtiin), sillä inflaatio on yleensä ennakoitavissa. Tämän lisäksi minimipalkka voi toimia inflaatiota ajavana tekijänä (ns. cost push -inflaatio). Tällöin pitää kysyä, että jos firmat siirtävät kohonneet tuotantokustannukset hintoihin, niin mitä hyötyä palkankorotuksista on?

SAK:n ehdotus on idioottimainen. Se nostaisi minimipalkan yli yhdeksään euroon per tunti. Mistä SAK päättelee, että huonosti koulutetut tai nuoret kykenevät tuottamaan tätä suuremman määrän tunnissa? Miksi juuri tämä määrä on oikea? SAK tietenkin tästä hyötyisi, sillä työntekijäpoolin supistaminen parantaa niiden asemaa, jotka jo tienaavat SAK:n ehdottamaa minimipalkkaa enemmän

Joidenkin mukaan "riittävä" minimipalkka kannustaisi ihmisiä hakeutumaan töihin. Tämä ei kuitenkaan tee mitään yllä mainitulle ongelmalle. Tässäkään tapauksessa kaksi väärää ei tee oikeata: Kannustimia tuhoavan sosiaaliturvan lisäksi meillä olisi työttömyyttä aiheuttava minimipalkka. Ylen uutisen kommenttiosiossa on hyvinvointiyhteiskunnan kannustimista paljon kertova kommentti:

Ehdottomasti pitää olla minimipalkka. Ihan naurattavaa tehdä töitä tuota alemmalla summalla. Itse ainakin miettisin kaksi kertaa, otanko vastaan noin vähäpalkkaisen työn vai pidänkö vapaa-aikani ja odotanko yhteiskunnan tuella parempaa paikkaa.

Miksi siis meidän pitäisi ylipäätänsä tarjota ihmisille vaihtoehto?

Kilpailullisilla markkinoilla ei yksinkertaisesti ole tarvetta minkäänlaisille minimipalkoille. Minimipalkka tekee potentiaalisesti tuottavat yksilöt tuottamattomiksi.

Sosiaaliturvan perässä Suomeen

Nykyään Suomen kilpailukykyä terästetään houkuttelemalla maahanmuuttajia elelemään veronmaksajien rahoilla. Eipä siinä mitään; en minä maahanmuuttajia lähtisi syyttämään. Heidän toimintansa on täysin moraalista. Ei ole heidän vikansa, että sossu on antelias. Ei ole heidän vikansa, että ay-liikkeet ja lainsäädäntö ovat luoneet jäykät työmarkkinat. Mutta en näe, miten tällaiseen porkkanaan perustuva maahanmuuttopolitiikka kykenisi parantamaan niin sanottua huoltosuhdetta. Korkeakoulutetut eivät tunnetusti Suomeen tule, vaan lähtevät täältä pikemminkin muualle, mieluiten alhaisempien marginaaliveroasteiden maihin. (Heidän motiivinaanhan on raha siinä missä maahanmuuttajienkin.) Hyvinvointimalli heikkoine kannustimine ja jäykkyyksineen ei sovi yhteen sen ajatuksen kanssa, että huoltosuhde ratkaistaisiin maahanmuutolla. Toisaalta ilman hyvinvointimallista johtuvaa talouden sääntelyä ei olisi mitään hoitajapulaa; vapailla markkinoilla yli- ja alijäämiä esiintyisi ainoastaan hetkittäisesti hintamekanismin tasapainottaessa kysynnän ja tarjonnan.

Jos olisin täysin perverssi, pitäisin nykyisenkaltaista maahanmuuton kehitystä jopa toivottavana: mitä suurempia rahoitusongelmia hyvinvointivaltio kohtaa, sitä pikemmin sitä lähdetään purkamaan.

Prekariaattien haihattelua

Myös prekariaatteina tunnetut uuskommunistit kannustavat "paskaduunien" tekijöitä (prekariaatteja?) kartellisoitumaan. Hieman mietityttää, mitä nämä tyypit oikeasti haluavat saavuttaa ja miten.

"Paskatyötä" tekevien palkkataso ja työolot ovat heikkoja, sillä heidän tuottavuutensa on sen mukaista. (Vasemmistolaiset eivät tietenkään pidä tätä mitenkään hyväksyttävänä seikkana, sillä heidän mielestään sillä, miten kouluttautunut yksilö on, ei ole mitään tekemistä yksilön omien valintojen kanssa.) On vaikea nähdä, miten kartellisoituminen nostaisi tuottavuutta. Ilman tuottavuuden kasvua se potti, josta palkkoja ja bonuksia markkinoilla jaetaan pysyy muuttumattomana, jolloin "paskatyötä" tekevien tulojen lisäys olisi ainoastaan joltakin muulta pois. Prekariaattien saama tulojen lisäys olisi ansaitsematon, epäoikeudenmukainen, sillä se ei perustuisi tuottavuuden kasvuun vaan kartellivaltaan.

Tyypit ovat myös perustulon kovia kannattajia. Perustulo yhdistettynä tasaveroon (jota vasemmistolaiset eivät hyväksy, vaikka yleisesti esitetyt tasaveromallit ovat progressiivisia perusvähennyksen ansiosta) ratkaisisi muutamia ongelmia, mutta prekariaatit haluavat perustulosta vaihtoehdon työnteolle. Kun Suomessa on jo valmiiksi korkeat, kannustimia tuhoavat rajaveroasteet, miksi kannustimia työnteolle pitäisi vielä tästä lähteä karsimaan?

Rahapelimarkkinat ja paternalismi

Tanska aikoo liberalisoida rahapelimarkkinoita. Kun Suomessa yleensä seurataan muiden Pohjoismaiden esimerkkiä niin asiassa kuin asiassa, niin tässä olisi nyt kerrankin siihen aihetta. Valitettavasti Tanskan tapauksessa ei näytä olevan kyse rahapelimarkkinoiden täydellisestä liberalisoinnista, vaan Danske Spil -valtionyhtiön monopolioikeuksien rajaamisesta. Yhtiö siis näyttää jäävän valtion käsiin. Tätä perustellaan samanlaisilla argumenteilla kuin Veikkauksen tai Rayn monopolia Suomessa: Osa tuloista allokoidaan kaikenlaiseen yhteiskunnan hyvinvointia edistävään toimintaan. Miten valtio on tässä suhteessa kyennyt ottamaan valtionomistuksen vaihtoehtoiskustannukset ja monopolista aiheutuvat hyvinvointitappiot huomioon, sitä en tiedä. Kyllähän Neuvostoliitonkin talousjärjestelmällä oli jotakin näyttää.

Toinen argumentti rahapelimonopolin puolesta on pelaamisesta aiheutuvat yhteiskunnalliset haitat. Tämä on tietenkin arvokysymys, ja vasemmistolaiset mielipiteet kallistuvat rankasti paternalismin puolelle. Koska yksilöt ovat heikkoja, houkutuksille alttiita ja yhteiskunnan hyvinvointia ajattelemattomia, heidät pitää pakottaa toimimaan heidän omien etujensa mukaan (aivan kuin valtio tietäisi, mikä on yksilön etujen mukaista).

Rahapelimarkkinoilla olisi vapaassa markkinataloudessakin tärkeä sosiaalinen tehtävä: allokoida idioottien varoja parempiin käsiin, ja vielä täysin vapaaehtoisten transaktioiden kautta. Miksi tätä pitäisi pyrkiä vastustamaan?

Irtisanomisista suivaantuneet työntekijät laskivat myöhään torstai-iltana vapaaksi pomonsa, jotka he aiemmin päivällä sieppasivat.

Kyselyiden mukaan noin puolet kansasta hyväksyy johtajien sieppaukset, mutta yrittäjäjärjestöt vaativat hallitusta lopettamaan ne heti.

Kysymys kuuluukin, mikseivät viranomaiset tehneet mitään? Eikö tässä olisi ollut homma RAID-erikoisjoukolle?

Tässä on tietenkin kyse siitä, että pienen ryhmän intressit ovat ristiriidassa talouden pitkän aikavälin tavoitteiden kanssa. Ranskassa työvoima ei ole yhtä järjestäytynyttä kuin Suomessa, mutta ay-liikkeet ovat silti hyvin vahvoja ja kykeneviä lamauttamaan talouden toimintaa. Laskusuhdanteessa talous hyötyy, kun hintatason annetaan sopeutua kitkattomasti. Esimerkiksi Amerikassa asuntojen hintojen lasku on hyvä edellytys asteittaiselle toipumiselle. Euroopassa ay-liikkeet kuitenkin ovat sen verran vahvoja, että taloudessa esiintyy merkittävää kitkaa, ja paluu "luonnolliseen" työttömyysasteeseen viivästyy useita vuosia, jos sitä ikinä saavutetaankaan.

Valtiovalta voi tietenkin pyrkiä heikentämään ay-liikkeitä. Näin tehtiin USA:ssa ja Britanniassa 80-luvulla. Ranskassa ongelmana on radikalismi, jolla on ollut merkittävä rooli sitten Ranskan vallankumouksen: Pieni liikehdintä kaduilla johtaa siihen, että päättäjät perääntyvät suunnitelmistaan. Sarkozyn tähän astinen kausi on toiminut erinomaisena esimerkkinä tästä, vaikka hän on joitain pieniä voittoja saavuttanutkin.

Myös yksityisten omistusoikeuksien kunnioitus on Ranskassa ollut vähäistä verrattuna muihin kapitalistisiin maihin. Ranskan vallankumous (Rousseau) asetti pienemmän merkityksen yksityiselle omaisuudelle kuin Amerikan vallankumous (Locke). Ranska on ollut hidas ja haluton oppimaan. Amerikan kasvaessa ja pysyessä kohtuullisen uskollisena liberaalidemokraattisille periaatteilleen, Ranska kärsi tuhoisista sodista ja johtajista, jotka pyyhkivät liberalismilla takapuoltaan. Amerikan pelastettua Ranskan toistamiseen maailmansodasta, Ranska alkoi painottamaan valtion roolia talouden ohjailussa (dirigisme). Valtiojohtoinen ohjailu tuli Ranskassa ja muissa Euroopan maissa viimeistään 80-luvulla osittain tiensä päähän, kun keynesiläinen talouspolitiikka lakkasi toimimasta oppikirjaesimerkkien (joita muuten vieläkin viljellään alkeiskursseilla) mukaan. Valtion talouspoliittinen rooli on kuitenkin säilynyt merkittävänä. Se mm. pyrkii aktiivisesti pitämään pystyssä yrityksiä ja teollisuutta, jonka olisi tullut kadota muualle jo vuosikymmeniä sitten haaskaamasta resursseja. Esimerkiksi autoteollisuus on saanut valtiolta runsaasti tukea.

Ranskassa, kuten monessa muussakin länsimaassa, kuvitellaan, että ongelmat johtuvat markkinataloudesta. Hyvinvointivaltio on esitetty kapitalismista irrallisena ilmiönä, ei kapitalismista riippuvaisena ilmiönä. Tämän lisäksi mm. Ranskassa taloustieteestä opetetaan jotain muuta kuin mainstream-versiota. Ei ihme, että siellä ammutaan jatkuvasti itseään jalkaan. Kuten ylläolevasta uutisesta käy ilmi, yli puolet ranskalaisista hyväksyy lainvastaisen toiminnan. Kaikki tämä siis pelkästään sen vuoksi, että Ranska voitaisiin säilyttää verraten tehottomana länsimaana.

Myös vihreinä tunnetut, kasvua ja hyvinvointia vihaavat kontrollihaluiset hullut ovat toivomassa "vain yhtä liharuokapäivää" Helsingin kouluihin:

Helsingin vihreät nuoret -järjestö toivoo kouluihin liharuokapäivää. Järjestö ehdotti keskiviikkona, että Helsingin kouluissa ja muissa kaupungin ruokaloissa tarjottaisiin liharuokaa korkeintaan kerran viikossa.

Tätä nykyä Helsingin kouluissa tarjotaan lihaa neljänä päivänä viikossa ja kalaa yhtenä päivänä. Kasvisruoka on vaihtoehtona joka päivä.

Mitä vikaa normaalissa ruokavaliossa on? Vihreiden kannattama, pelkästään kasviksista koostuva ruokavalio on luonnoton ja ironisesti talouskasvun mahdollistama. Ihmisen elimistö on sopeutunut sekaravintoon. Vielä sata vuotta sitten ihmisellä ei ollut tarpeeksi tietoa ihmiselimistön tarvitsemista ravintoaineista. Pelkkä kasvisruokavalio on satojen vuosien ajan ollut terveysriski. Pelkän kasviksen syönti ei ole sen luonnollisempaa kuin pelkän lihan syönti. Kasvissyönnissä ei olekaan kyse lasten terveydestä vaan moraalista. Lihansyönnin pitäminen moraalittomana on typerää, abstraktitason haihattelua. Tähän väliin sopiikin lisää hyvää settiä Starship Troopers -kirjasta.

Kun vielä huomioidaan, että kasvisruokaa on kuitenkin saatavilla joka päivä, on vihreiden kanta vielä vaikeammin ymmärrettävissä. Koululaiset ovat tunnetusti nirsoja ruoan suhteen, joten liharuoan katoaminen ruokaloista johtaisi lähinnä karkkipatukoiden kulutuksen lisääntymiseen kouluaikana.

Julkisten koulujen ei tulisi opettaa mitään ideologiaa. Toisaalta koulu soveltuu mitä parhaiten virallisen ideologian iskostamiseen lasten mieliin. Koska vihreiden toimien takana on halu hallita yksilöiden käyttäytymistä, ei tällaisen paternalismin kannattaminen ole mitenkään ihmeellistä. Jos peruskoulut yksityistettäisiin, koulut saisivat itse päättää, minkälaista ruokaa tarjoavat. Tosin tällöin hippivanhemmat passittaisivat lapsensa pelkkää kasvisruokaa tarjoaviin kouluihin, mikä olisi vähintään yhtä arveluttavaa - ja kaiken lisäksi paljon vaarallisempaa - kuin lapsiansa kristillisiin kouluihin passittavat vanhemmat.

Muistakaa myös, että Hitler oli kasvissyöjä. Joidenkin historioitsijoiden mukaan Hitler kiihdytti sota- ja tuhoamiskampanjoitaan heikon kuntonsa vuoksi, jonka arvellaan osittain johtuneen hänen kasvisruokavaliostaan. Ruokavalio saattaa myös selittää näiden nykyvihreiden "toiveet". Eikös jonkin teorian mukaan lihansyönti edistä aivojen kehitystä?

Limits to Growth: The 30-Year Update is a scary book; not because of its predictions but because of its recommendations. Seriously, a global environmental collapse does not sound all that bad if the alternative is some communist dictatorship led by the kind of people (victims of the Fatal Conceit as Friedrich von Hayek would say) who wrote this book.

All the arguments in the book are based on a computer model. (This is the fatal conceit: that these Ph.Ds think they can first model and then guide the world with their expertise.) The first 200 pages are pretty tedious, going through various scenarios with a bit different variables and values each time. After this the book gets scary. The real agenda is revealed to be nothing but an attempt to control the world by controlling consumers via central planning. They never of course say it out loud but what else could they mean?

From page 240:

But what if the world's people decide to moderate not only their demand for children, but also their material lifestyles? What if they set tehmselves a goal of an adequate but not excessive standard of living? ... To achieve this change would mean that the globe's people establish their status, derive satisfaction, and challenge themselves with goals other than ever-increasing production and ever-accumulating material wealth.

Okay, it is very hard for me to believe that the authors believe even for a second that individuals around the world would somehow just choose to "moderate" their material lifestyles. Accumulating stuff may very well be a part of our biological makeup. This may be because, at least to any single individual, more is better since those with more are better positioned than those with less. This is hardly news to anyone. In this respect greed is an emotion that serves a biological purpose just like love, hate or some other emotion. Only a totalitarian dictatorship can "remove" this desire and it can do that by making it impossible to accumulate stuff. Remove restrictions and the people will tell you to go fuck that Little Red Book of yours.

... figure 7-2, shows a simulated world again with a desired family size of two and perfect birth control, and now also with a definition of enough. This world has decided to aim for an industrial output per capita level for everyone that is about 10 percent higher than the world average in the year 2000. [Boldface mine.]

This is their definition of an adequate but not excessive standard of living. Once again we're given a taste of the left's tendency to define what people really need. Shortly after this the authors try to convince the reader that "It does not necessarily mean that the population and economy are static or stagnant. They stay roughly constant in total size, the way a river stays roughly constant in volume, even though water is always running through it." Seriously, how are you planning on maintaining a certain level of income without extremely coercive measures? The authors would destroy the very mechanisms that could save us from environmental problems. Since the market economy would be the first to go in their new world order, market dynamism would no longer be the primary source of technological innovation.

In the authors' utopia the only place for innovation would be the government:

A sustainable society would be interested in qualitative development, not physical expansion. It would use material growth as a considered tool, not a perpetual mandate. Neither for nor against growth, it would begin to discriminate among kinds of growth and puposes for growth ... Before a sustainable society would decide on any specific growth proposal, it would ask what the growth is for, and who would benefit, and what it would cost, and how long it woud last, and whether the growth could be accomodated by the sources and sinks of the earth. Such a society would apply its values and its best knowledge of the earth's limits to choose only those kinds of growth that would serve important social goals while enhancing sustainability. Once any physical growth had accomplished its purposes, society would stop its pursuit.

By now you should get the idea. No doubt the authors would be among those making the decisions, consulting their computer models and "experts". Free market capitalism would cease to exist since growth is an automatic result of competition. To end competition, you must first end consumer choice since whenever a consumer makes a choice between two similar products, he encourages competition. What the authors seem to want is some kind of a huge gosplan responsible for resource allocation.

Here is some other creepy stuff from page 261:

Creativity is needed here to get beyond the narrow idea that some peple "create" jobs for others, and the even narrower idea that workers are simply costs to be cut. What is needed is an economic system that uses and supports the contributions all people are able to make, that shares work, leisure, and economic outputs equitably, and that does not abandon people who for reasons temporary or permanent cannot work ... People don't need enormous cars; they need admiration and respect ... Trying to fill real but nonmaterial needs - for indendity, community, self-esteem, challenge, love, joy - with material things is to set up and unquenchable appetite for false solutions to never-satisfied longings.

Once again you can see how the left (this includes the green/eco movement) always knows what we really need. (An enormous car can, by the way, give you plenty of admiration and respect. Not that I'd know.)

The people who wrote this book are dangerous. The green movement is filled with people who believe that drastic measures must be taken to save the earth from man even if that means sacrificing individual liberty. Limits to Growth: The 30-year Update is nothing but a gigantic call for central planning and collectivism. The book is a bible for the eco movement just as Mein Kampf was/is to nazism.

Yle lähetti tänään (keskiviikkona) noin kymmenen aikoihin finanssikriisiä käsittelevän dokumentin. Kirjoitan jossain vaiheessa enemmän tuosta finanssikriisistä, mutta tähän väliin kiinnittäisin huomion Ylen dokumentissa haastateltuihin ekonomisteihin.

Paul Krugman: Krugman voitti äskettäin Nobelin, mitä jotkin tahot pitivät lähinnä yrityksenä vaikuttaa USA:n presidentinvaaleihin. Krugman on viime vuosina terästäytynyt lähinnä George W. Bushin haukkumisella NYTimes-lehden kolumnistina ja blogaajana. (Krugman muuten aikoinaan kritisoi John Kenneth Galbraithia ankarasti siitä, että J.K. kirjoitti lähinnä suurelle yleisölle, tarjoten helppoja ratkaisuja monimutkaisiin ongelmiin. Kuten tästä paperista voi lukea, Krugmanista on nähtävästi tullut Galbraith.)

James K. Galbraith: Tunnetun keynesiläisen taloustieteilijän John Kenneth Galbraithin poika. Kuten yllä tuli mainittua, John kirjoitti lähinnä suurelle yleisölle kansantajuista tekstiä valtion interventioiden tarpeellisuudesta ja siitä, miten tulevaisuudessa monopolit hallitsevat maailmaa. Poika on seurannut isänsä kengissä ja on pelannut Krugmanin ohella merkittävää roolia keynesiläisen taloustieteen saattamisessa takaisin talouspolitiikan keskiöön finanssikriisin myötä.

Alice M. Rivlin: Vasemmistolaiselle Brookings-aivoriihelle työskentelevä Rivlin on jo pitkään demokraattien riveissä vaikuttanut tarjontapuolen taloustieteen kriitikko.

Näiden kolmen ekonomistin avulla Yle kokkasi keiton, jota jossain SDP-helvetissä voitaneen pitää reiluna & tasapuolisena katsauksena USA:n finanssikriisin syihin. Olivat sentään saaneet mukaan hieman Greenspanin Fedin kritiikkiä. Tosin Greenspan esitettiin hirveänä markkinaliberaalina, joka lähinnä dereguloi ja uskoi sokeasti vapaisiin markkinoihin.

Vääriä ratkaisuehdotuksia Afrikan ongelmiin

Yhä nälkäisemmäksi maailman ongelmien ratkaisemisen suhteen käyvä Martti Ahtisaari kritisoi nykyistä kehitysapupolitiikkaa. Uuden kehitysapupolitiikan painopisteeksi hän nostaisi koulutuksen:

- Vastaus on hyvin yksinkertainen. On keskityttävä työllistämään ja kouluttamaan nuoria. Tarjoamaan heille aidosti mahdollisuus kunnon työpaikkaan.

Ei ole mikään ihme, että hyvinvointivaltiossa kasvanut ehdottaisi jotain tuollaista. Täällähän yleisesti kuvitellaan, että kattava julkinen koululaitos on jokin Graalin malja, jolle kuuluu kiitos korkeasta elintasostamme eli siitä hyvinvoinnista. Näin ei tietenkään todellisuudessa ole, sillä nykyisen kaltainen, julkisen sektorin tarjoama koulutus on suhteellisen uusi tulokas markkinataloudessamme. Ennen teollista vallankumousta vuosittainen talouskasvu Euroopassa oli prosentin kymmenesosien luokkaa. Teollisen vallankumouksen seurauksena alettiin puhua jo kahden prosentin keskimääräisesti vuosittaisesta kasvuvauhdista. Suomessa (joka tuolloin kuului takapajuiseen Venäjän keisarikuntaan) tämä kehitys käynnistyi 1800-luvun lopulla markkinoiden liberalisoinnin myötä. Suomalaiset nauttivat suhteellisen korkeasta elintasosta jo kauan ennen kuin kukaan oli edes kuullut termiä hyvinvointivaltio.

Miljardien investoiminen afrikkalaisten koulutustason parantamiseen on hirveätä resurssien hukkaan heittämistä ja prioriteettien unohtamista. Vasta kun afrikkalaisissa valtioissa jyllää vapaa markkinatalous, on köyhien koulutuksen tukemisessa jotain järkeä. Koulutus ei johda niukkojen resurssien tehokkaaseen käyttöön.

YK:ssa vuonna 2000 hyväksytyt vuosituhattavoitteet tähtäävät äärimmäisen köyhyyden poistamiseen. Toistaiseksi on käynyt toisin. Iso pala monien Saharan eteläpuolisten valtioiden budjeteista lepää yhä kansainvälisen kehitysavun varassa.

Tämä toimiikin esimerkkinä moraalikadosta: Kun länsimaat syynäävät ilmaista rahaa korruptoituneille johtajille, he katsovat reformien olevan tarpeettomia; miksi parantaa paikallisia oloja, kun se johtaisi oman kukkaron autioitumiseen?

Köyhyyden poistamisessa on epäonnistuttu Afrikassa. Kiina on sen sijaan nostanut 300 miljoonaa köyhyydestä.

Tässä vaiheessa joku olisi voinut edes mainita vapaiden markkinoiden merkityksen. Monelta nähtävästi on unohtunut, että itsenäistyttyään moni afrikkalainen valtio valitsi Neuvostoliiton järjestelmän mallikseen. Maareformit sun muut sosialisoinnit johtivat sitten tietenkin miljoonia niittäneisiin nälänhätiin. Kiinassa vastaava kehitys johti kehitykseen kohti vapaampia markkinoita.

Kymmenen vuoden kuluessa maailman työmarkkinoille pyrkii 1,3 miljardia alle 30-vuotiasta nuorta, joista ImagineNations-järjestön arvion mukaan ainoastaan 300 miljoonaa kyetään työllistämään.

Kehitysapu onkin edesauttanut tätä kehitystä. Kun darwinististen paineiden ei anneta tehdä työtänsä, ylijäämäpopulaation ongelman täytyy näkyä jossakin eli lähinnä työttömyydessä, nälänhädissä ja sodissa.

Thou Shalt Not Insult

An anti-Israel brain trust also known as the United Nations is now selling the idea that its member states should reinstate blasphemy laws (in case they ever went away in the first place which is not the case in Finland). Contrary to some slightly exaggerated reactions here, this short analysis suggests that this thing probably won't affect a thing for now, but the whole thing just goes to show how useless an organization the UN is: it is essentially a charitable organization ("Keeping the World's Poor Poor").

But countries have lately become more sympathetic to the view that religious feelings should not be hurt. If the amount of Muslims in European countries keeps growing the political pressure to adopt strict anti-defamation laws grows as well. We already have left-wingies persecuting individuals such as Geert Wilders for daring to criticize Islam for being a fascist ideology. Wilders has an idea:

I propose the withdrawal of all hate speech legislation in Europe....In Europe, we should defend freedom of speech like Americans do....Millions think liberty is precious. That democracy is better than Shariah....there is no stronger power than the force of free men fighting for the great cause of liberty.

The UN is not even a western organization so why should we pay any attention to what it is saying? It's a forum where crap countries are worth just as much as civilized countries. There is no reason for it to exist. John McCain's idea (originally proposed by Robert Kagan) of a League of Democracies sounds much better, though its main purpose would be to counter the threat of notable authoritarian states such as Russia or China, not to counter the threat of Islamist fascism. What a fucking disgrace to United Arab Emirates and sports:

In February, [Shahar] Peer was prevented from playing at the Dubai Tennis Championships after she was denied entry into the United Arab Emirates, a country that does not have diplomatic relations with Israel. A number of players among which Venus Williams, condemned the action to not grant Peer a visa, and WTA chief Larry Scott said that he had considered cancelling the tournament, but chose not to after consulting Peer. Tournament director Salah Tahlak said that Peer was refused on the grounds that her appearance could incite anger in the Arab country, after she had already faced protests at the ASB Classic over the 2008–2009 Israel–Gaza conflict. The WTA said that it would review future tournaments in Dubai. Due to the action, the Tennis Channel decided not to televise the event and The Wall Street Journal dropped its sponsorship. She says canceling the tournament wouldn't have been fair to other players. So why didn't the players withdraw from the tournament as a sign of protest? An excellent ESPN article argues that particularly the Williams sisters should have taken a stand:

This was a rare opportunity to make a significant stand. If anyone should have accepted the challenge and taken up Peer's fight, it should have been the Williams sisters, whose immense success always has been intertwined with the underlying tension created by their race and gender.
It didn't matter that Peer said it would have been unfair to the players if the event were canceled. The two biggest icons in women's tennis should have boycotted anyway, instead of offering their colleague surface-level support and shallow rationalizations.

At least some sponsors had the guts to do the right thing and withdraw their support. Also, Andy Roddick, an American tennis player, withdrew from the men's tournament.

Dubai is not of course the only crap country with anti-Israel lunatics. Shahar faced protesters, led by an "anti-racist" asshole, in New Zealand earlier this year.

A Dutch lawmaker [Geert Wilders] barred from Britain because of his anti-Islamic views said Thursday he had been detained at London's Heathrow Airport and would be returned home.

The British government had warned Wilders he was not welcome because he posed a threat to "community harmony and therefore public security." A letter from the British Embassy in the Netherlands this week informed him he would not be allowed into the United Kingdom.

Wilders criticized the travel ban as an attempt to stifle freedom of speech, and traveled to Britain anyway.

He said he had no regrets about the trip, attacking what he called "the cowards in the U.K. government," and accusing British Prime Minister Gordon Brown of having a servile attitude toward Islam.

No wonder though: the UK has a long record of appeasement policies.

Tosin kun amerikkalainen on kyseessä, kyseessä tuskin on niinkään yhteiskunnallisen epäkohdan korjaaminen kuin mahdollisuus imeä rahaa maineikkaalta yhtiöltä. Suomessa tuskin menee kauaa, kun strippiluolan omistaja ei enää saa syrjiä strippariehdokkaita sukupuolen perusteella. Tähän suuntaan vieviä lakiehdotuksiahan sataa taivaalta kaiken aikaa.

Tuossa jutussa käydään läpi aika hyvin, miksi omistajalla tulisi olla oikeus palkata kenet tahansa. Koska kenelläkään ei voi olla mitään oikeutta työhön (oikeus työhön = oikeus toisen omaisuuteen), päätös palkata pelkästään naisia tarjoilijoiksi on omistusoikeuksien soveltamista aivan kuten sekin, kun minä päätän kenet asuntooni päästän. Hootersin tapauksessa kyse on tietenkin siitä, että mieshakija ei yksinkertaisesti ole pätevä, sillä nätit tarjoilijatytöt nimenomaan kuuluvat Hootersin brändiin. Tämän takia kyse ei ole syrjinnästä sen enempää kuin tapauksessa, jossa mekaanikkoa ei koulutuksensa perusteella palkata kemistiksi.

Tosin vapaassa markkinataloudessa (jossa valtio ei omista firmoja) tulisi "syrjinnän" jonkin ulkoisen, merkityksettömän tekijän perusteella olla vapaata. On järjetöntä olettaa, että ilman valtiota syrjintää esiintyisi runsaasti. Kilpailullisilla markkinoilla järjetöntä syrjintää harrastavat firmat karsiutuisivat automaattisesti pätevien työntekijöiden päätyessä sellaisten firmojen palkkalistoille, jotka eivät syrji ulkoisten tekijöiden perusteella.

Onneksi ällömäinen, keinotekoinen egalitarismi kostautuu ennen pitkää.

Työryhmä ehdottaa yksilönvapauden rajoittamista:

Valmisteilla oleva tupakkalain tiukennus rajoittaisi tupakoivien ihmisten esittämistä lehdissä, televisiossa ja teatterin lavalla.

Ehdotus sisältyy tupakkapoliittisia lakimuutoksia ja toimia valmistelevan työryhmän loppuraporttiin. Siinä tupakkalain kahdeksatta pykälää halutaan täydentää niin, että tupakkatuotteen mainontakielto koskisi myös "tupakoinnin suoraa ja epäsuoraa mainostamista ja edistämistä".

Toivottavasti ihosi nousee kananlihalle joka kerta, kun kuulet valtion suunnittelevan työryhmän perustamista jonkin yhteiskunnallisen epäkohdan korjaamiseksi. Byrokraattien ja poliitikkojen ongelma on, että kuvitellaan valtaan pääsemisen tarkoittavan, että jotain pitää tehdä. Oppisivat vaan pitämään näppinsä erossa.

Kannattaa muuten suhtautua skeptisesti puheisiin tupakoinnin negatiivisista ulkoisvaikutuksista. Kansantaloudelliselta kannalta tupakoinnilla on myös positiivisia ulkoisvaikutuksia, sillä syöpäkääryleitä tupruttelevat kuolevat muita aiemmin ja näin ollen eivät käytä eläkevaroja ja vanhuusiän ongelmiin liittyviä terveydenhuoltopalveluita yhtä paljon kuin tupakoimattomat. Jos ulkoishyödyt ylittävät ulkoishaitat, kansantaloudelliselta kannalta järkevämpää olisi tupakoinnin subventointi kuin verottaminen.

Creeping redistribution

Socialism is being sold to Americans, some of it behind curtains. The financial crisis is being used as a decoy to push through all kinds of ludicrous pieces of legislation that never would have passed three years ago. With Barack Obama in charge, there will be no one to put on the brakes.

Robert Reich, an Obama advisor, and his comrades are actually suggesting that handouts should be given not to those with skills who just happen to be currently out of a job but to those with no skills, no job prospects (many of who are long-term unemployed already) and to minorities and women. This is derived from Marx's "From each according to his ability to each according to his needs." Apparently the skilled should be punished for having acquired skills and the unskilled should be rewarded for not having acquired skills.

There are economic arguments for such handouts such as the average propensity to consume of low-income individuals which is higher than that of middle- and high-income individuals. But, unlike investing in infrastructure, such handouts make no sense in the long run. Supporting low income individuals with no prospects makes no sense since it simply allocates money away from more productive purposes. Why support those with no prospects instead of those with prospects and who could actually, one day, contribute to economic growth which then could lift even the ones with no prospects? And if we're talking about long-run prospects for growth then we only need to look at the example of the Soviet Union where unproductive pursuits were rewarded. Sending money to slums and inefficient car companies is no way to pursue a stable long-run growth policy.

Even more bizarre was Reich's talk of handing out money based on skin color & gender. How does that make any sense?

Like always, the left is using a crisis to seek ways to implement egalitarian policies.

Juha Tolonen ehdottaa Kaleva-lehden kolumnissa GPI:n eli Genuine Progress Indicator -mittarin käyttöönottoa hyvinvoinnin mittariksi bruttokansantuotteen kasvua kuvaavan mittarin sijaan. Vaikka bruttokansantuote per pää ei ole täydellinen mittari, on se sentään yksinkertainen ja neutraali. GPI on sitä vastoin poliittisesti latautunut mittari. Tuollaisiin orwellilaisesti nimettyihin mittareihin tulee suhtautua skeptisesti, sillä niiden laaja käyttöönotto voisi olla jopa vaarallista.

Redefining Progress -saitilla on pintapuolisesti esitelty GPI:hin sisältyviä muuttujia. Alla olevat kommenttini perustuvat siis näihin pintapuolisiin esityksiin.

Income Distribution: Both economic theory and common sense tell us that the poor benefit more from a given increase in their income than do the rich. Accordingly, the GPI rises when the poor receive a larger percentage of national income, and falls when their share decreases.

Jo tuo ensimmäinen lause on hyvin kyseenalainen. Jos sitä, miten paljon kuluttaja arvostaa jotain hyödykettä, ei mitata optimaalisesti sillä, miten paljon kuluttaja on siitä valmis maksamaan, niin millä mittarilla hyödykettä pitäisi pyrkiä arvostamaan? Makuasioista ei voida kiistellä.* Yleensä kestävämmät tuotteet maksavat enemmän eli halpoja mutta helposti hajoavia tuotteita ostavat preferoivat jälkimmäisiä.

Dependence on Foreign Assets: If a nation allows its capital stock to decline, or if it finances consumption out of borrowed capital, it is living beyond its means. The GPI counts net additions to the capital stock as contributions to well-being, and treats money borrowed from abroad as reductions. If the borrowed money is used for investment, the negative effects are canceled out. But if the borrowed money is used to finance consumption, the GPI declines.

Österman Israelista

Ei ole mikään ihme, että Lars "Monetary Crank" Östermanin blogista löytyy tällaista läppää Israelista. Tuon talousdemokratia-aatteen mukana nähtävästi annostellaan yleensä roima annos salaliittoteorioita sun muuta. Joskus on vaikea erottaa fanaattisia Ron Paul -faneja näistä crankeista. Molemmista leireistä löytyy kaikenlaisia höyrypäitä, joiden mielestä juutalaiset hallitsevat USA:n ulkopolitiikkaa (joidenkin mielestä koko maailmaa), USA:n tiedustelupalvelut junailivat 9/11-iskut ja niin edelleen.

Tässä humoristisessa kuvasarjassa viljellään sitä uskomusta, että juutalaiset olisivat varastaneet palestiinalaisten maata. Varsinkin tuossa ensimmäisessä kuvassa annetaan ymmärtää, että vuonna 1946 oli olemassa jonkinlainen Palestiinan valtio. Näin ei tietenkään ollut, eivätkä juutalaiset varastaneet maata, vaan hankkivat sitä laillisesti perustaen asumuksia lähinnä tyhjille seuduille ja vuokraamalla maata. YK:n jako vuodelta 1947 perustui siihen, että juutalaiset saisivat ne alueet, joissa he ovat enemmistönä eli suurin piirtein tämän mukaan. (Tuo eteläkärki, joka ehdotettiin kuuluvaksi juutalaisten alueeseen, on Negevin aavikkoa.) Kuten on aiemminkin tullut mainittua, ei sillä olisi ollut mitään väliä, vaikka arabeille oltaisiin tarjottu 90 prosenttia Palestiinasta. Arabit olivat jo vuonna 1937 tyrmänneet tämän ehdotuksen. Kyseessä oli puhtaasti periaatteellinen syy vastustaa mitä tahansa juutalaisvaltiota Palestiinassa. Kehitys, joka näkyy tuon kuvasarjan kahdessa viimeisessä kuvassa, onkin sitten arabien oman peeloilun ansiota. Yleenä sodan aloittanut ja vielä hävinnyt osapuoli menettää jotain, kuten kuuluukin.

Kun muuten otetaan huomioon palestiinalaisten silloiset suhteet natsien holokaustimasiinaan, tuo YK:n jako oli arabeille aivan liian antelias.

En todellakaan ymmärrä niitä joiden jokapäiväseen mantraan kuuluu " mutta onhan israelilaisten saatava puolustaa itseään raketti-iskuja vastaan". Kyseiset raketit ovat lähinnä kellareissa koottuja ruudilla täytettyjä peltiputkia joita voi verrata isomman luokan ilotulitteisiin ja joiden osumatarkkuus on naurettavan huono.

Ja jos Gazalaiset ampuvatkin jotain järeämpää niin eiköhän se ole vähintäinkin oikeutettua huomioiden miten vihollinen on vienyt alueita alkuperäisasukkailta.

Keneltä ihmeen alkuperäisasukkailta? Palestiinan alue on ollut pilkottuna muun muassa egyptiläisten, syyrialaisten ja ottomaanien vallan alla ja sitä ovat kansoittaneet kaikenlaiset paikasta toiseen liikkuvat paimentolaiset.

Oikeus palkkaan

Akavan puheenjohtaja Matti Viljasen mukaan työntekijällä on oikeus palkkaansa, ja tällä perusteella hän vastustaa palkkojen alennuksia.

Akavan puheenjohtajan mielestä palkanalennukset eivät ole mahdollisia taantuman aikana.

-Lähtökohtaisesti tilanne on se, että ihminen ansaitsee palkkansa, ja sillä palkalla pidetään tätä suomalaisen yhteiskunnan ja ostovoimaa ja rakenteita ylhäällä ja pystyssä.

Tämä kuulostaa todella oudolta perusteelta vastustaa palkanalennuksia. Siinä on sitten turha puhua oikeuksista palkkaan, kun työntekijöitä joudutaan karsimaan palkkajäykkyyksien seurauksena. Tuo puhe suomalaisen yhteiskunnan rakenteista on pelkästään koomista. Mitä tulee ostovoimaan, sen ei välttämättä tarvitsisi laskea nimellispalkkojen myötä jos hinnat olisivat täysin joustavia, mutta kiitos viljasten, näin ei ole.

- On positiivinen asia, että koulutusta arvostetaan. Siksi näitä koulutuspaikkoja on Suomessa tiheään, ja se on nostanut koulutettujen määrää yli sen, mitä tällainen pieni kansakunta kykenee ottamaan vastaan. Koulutuksen laatu on se ratkaiseva asia, jolla Suomi pärjää maailmalla, ei niinkään se määrä.

Tässä hän on tietenkin oikeassa, mutta kun otetaan tuo oikeus palkkaan -väite huomioon, Viljasen motiivi karsia akateemisen alan koulutuspaikkoja taitaa olla sama kuin taksikuskien motiivi vastustaa taksilisenssien määrän lisäämistä. Byrokraatit ovat muutenkin auttamattoman hitaita tekemään koulutukseen liittyviä päätöksiä siten, että koulutuksen tarjonta vastaisi työmarkkinoiden todellisia tarpeita. Koulutuksen kysyntää voidaankin rajoittaa paljon helpommin: määrätään koulutukselle hinta.

Helsingin Sanomat liittyy anti-Israel-kuoroon

Suomalainen media jatkaa Israelin vastaisten fiilisten ilmaisua. Ensin Olli Kivinen syyttää Israelia Gazan kurjuudesta, sitten vaaditaan sotatoimien lopettamista pelkästään sillä perusteella, että sodassa kuolee siviileitä. Varsinkin tuossa jälkimmäisessä artikkelissa kannattaa kiinnittää huomiota siihen, miten Helsingin Sanomat näyttää nojaavan gazalaisiin lähteisiin Israelin puolustusvoimien sijaan. Kirjoituksessa kerrotaan räikeästi, miten Israel säälittä pommittaa ja ampuu siviileitä, nähtävästi ilman mitään syytä.

Toiseksi viimeisessä kappaleessa sanotaan näin:

Hamas kantaa oman vastuunsa siitä, että se ilmoitti jatkavansa raketti-iskuja huolimatta YK:n turvallisuusneuvostossa torstaina lopulta hyväksytystä päätöslauselmasta, jossa vaaditaan välitöntä loppua myös raketti-iskuille. Tämä ei vähennä Israelin vastuuta siitä, millaisia keinoja se käyttää omassa sotimisessaan.

Ei sanaakaan siitä, miten Hamas systemaattisesti käyttää siviilirakennuksia (sairaaloita, kouluja jne.) tukikohtinaan. Ehkä Helsingin Sanomien toimittajien kannattaisi lukea esimerkiksi Jerusalem Postia, josta heti löytyisi hieman perspektiiviä:

Hamas is using Gaza's Shifa Hospital as a meeting place and even distributed salaries to its operatives there over the weekend, Public Security Minister and former Shin Bet head Avi Dichter said Monday morning.
"Shifa Hospital has long ago ceased to be just a hospital, just as the UNRWA humanitarian and health services in Gaza long ago ceased to be just humanitarian services providing food and medical services."
"UN schools in Gaza long ago stopped being just schools," the minister said. "All these services and places are refuge for Hamas terrorists and commanders."

Ministerin mukaan Israel on päättänyt jättää kyseisen sairaalan rauhaan "ilmiselvistä syistä". Toisaalta Hamas näyttää käyttävän sairaalaa turvapaikkanaan samoista ilmiselvistä syistä. Myös Ynetnews-saitin uutisannista selviää, että terroristit säilöivät runsaasti aseita erääseen kouluun ja olivat virittäneen koulun räjähtämään. Tämäkin on jäänyt HS:n artikkelin kirjoittajalta nähtävästi huomiotta, mikä tosin ei ole mikään ihme, kun huomioidaan objektiivisuuden taso kyseisessä sanomalehdessä.

Myös maailmalla Israelin toiminnan tuomitseminen jatkuu. YK:n alaisuudessa toimiva Human Rights Council äänesti Israelin sotatoimia vastaan. Ranska haluaa sotilastarkkailijoita valvomaan tulevaa tulitaukoa. Ranska on todennäköisesti unohtanut, miten vastaavanlainen operaatio Libaononissa johti Hezbollahin aseistautumiseen sotilastarkkailijoiden nenien edessä. Italiassa ammattiyhdistysliikkeet ovat palanneet ajassa 70 vuotta takaisinpäin kannattaessaan juutalaisten pitämien liikkeiden boikottia. Näitä juutalaisvastaisia boikotteja tosin löytyy vähän joka paikasta.

Vasemmisto ja islamofasistit ovat jälleen löytäneet toisensa kaduilta. Atlas Shrugs -blogissa on hyviä kuvia nats... palestiinalaisia kannattavien mellakoista (1, 2, 3). Joukkoon mahtuu myös muutama, todennäköisesti uskonnollisten hörhöjen järjestämä pro-Israel-mielenosoitus, mutta eipähän näy ketään potkimassa kauppojen ikkunoita säpäleiksi. Taidanpa hankkia jostain tuollaisen komean Israelin lipun.

The Finnish media keeps pounding Israel

A major Finnish newspaper is calling Israel's campaign in Gaza a genocide. Not only that, but it compares operation Cast Lead to the First Chechen War (during which maybe even a hundred thousand civilians died). I may be wrong, but isn't the comparison quite disproportionate? The article then states that those in Finland who're backing Israel are mostly the kind of people who're doing it for religious reasons. (Israel is a very secular country by the way, which is quite an achievement in the middle of all that religious extremism.) In other words, those who support Israel in Finland are apparently idiots. So, I take it the smart ones don't support Israel?

The article then claims that Israel is an artificial creation. But if Israel is an artificial creation, then what is Palestine? And how exactly is Israel any more artificial than, say, Finland? Just as we, the Finns, have our roots in Finland, a region historically occupied and settled by Finns, so do the Jewish people have their roots in Israel. Hell, the Jews had a culture and a history in Israel long before we even existed as a people.

Of course Muslims have their roots in the "Holy Land" as well. When the UN proposed to divide the British Mandate of Palestine into two states the idea was that both Jews and Muslims could settle in and around an area that has such a huge historical meaning to both groups. Muslims rejected the plan out of principle simply because they opposed the idea of Jews acquiring any piece of that land. Seeing how many Muslim leaders sided with the nazis only a few years before the plan I could go even further and argue that Muslims simply hated Jews.

In all fairness, there is a mention in the article that some of Israel's actions may be justified on the grounds that Hamas has launched more than 7000 rockets over the border to Israel during the past two years. The article also states the fact that Hamas wishes to see Israel destroyed. However, since the article condemns Israel's campaign against Hamas I'm not sure what the writer thinks should be done. There is a proposition that the international community should arrange a ceasefire but as I argued earlier, a ceasefire is simply a way for Hamas to catch a breath and rearm.

After this the article goes on to repeat the usual "both sides are wrong" and that "violence won't solve a thing" arguments.

But violence has solved things for Israel. With these "excursions" into Gaza, Lebanon and the West Bank Israel can keep herself safe while waiting for a change in the Middle East that'd push the region forward. No doubt Hamas, Hezbollah and others will continue to attack Israel from time to time but considering the alternative, the destruction of Israel (not by Hamas or Hezbollah but by Iran, Syria and others who'd love to see Israel severely weakened), this is something Israel can manage. After all, despite all the recent attacks on Israel it is still a relatively safe country to live in.

So, the media has been at it again. In case you're a European, keep your eyes on Israellycool (and vote for it as the best Middle East blog) for a comprehensive account of the situation including links to relevant articles, Youtube videos and so on. The fact that Israel is mostly backed by religious nuts in Finland is no doubt a result of the never-ending media campaign against Israel and the fact that most people, even those with an access to the internet, rely on local newspapers.

What's with the blockade?

Some say the latest Israel-Hamas ceasefire ended because Hamas was forced to act as a result of the Israeli blockade of Gaza. Let's see why such a blockade was justified.

As a result of a short civil war between Hamas and Fatah in Gaza in summer 2007 Fatah was ousted. Hamas, a terrorist group built on the idea that the Jewish state should be destroyed, has ever since the civil war been in charge of security in Gaza. They also found and are now using weapons supplied to Fatah by the United States. The whole security apparatus of Gaza is now in the hands of Hamas. This includes intelligence information provided to Fatah by the West.

If this is not a proper reason to seal Gaza then I don't know what is. If Gazans suffer as a result of this, one only needs to ask who told them to vote for Hamas who, after their election victory, violently ousted a rival party.

Israel is still taking laudable measures to protect the Gazan civilian population from harm. They're dropping fliers from planes, calling Gazans to warn them in advance, using sound bombs to clear civilians from buildings designated as targets, supplying humanitarian aid and so on. Only about a fifth of all casualties so far are civilians. This is a tragedy of course but as I argued previously, Hamas is responsible for every single casualty. Israel has every right and reason to protect its borders and population.

Meanwhile, I'd like to see editorials like this or this in Finnish newspapers. Instead, we get crap like this and this.

Arabimaat, YK ja Satakunnan Kansa: Israelilla ei oikeutta itsepuolustukseen

Hamas ended its six-month cease-fire with Israel on December 19 - a day before it was due to expire - and the number of rockets fired at Israel from Gaza, which had dwindled significantly, returned to pre-truce levels. Dozens of Qassams and mortars had been launched almost daily at Israeli communities near the Gaza border since Hamas declared the truce over.

Niin sanotun tulitauonkin aikana Israel on melkein päivittäin joutunut sietämään rakettitulta Gazan suunnalta. Nyt kun viimein näyttää siltä, että Israel on tosissaan lähtemässä kitkemään Hamas-järjestöä Gazan kaistaleelta, antisemitistinen YK on ensimmäisenä tuomitsemassa Israelin iskut. Samalla YK tuomitsi Hamasin raketti-iskut, mutta miksi vasta nyt? Miksi YK heräsi vasta Israelin tehtyä jotain puolustaakseen kansalaistensa henkeä juutalaisvaltiota vastustavilta terroristeilta?

Uhreja on jo satoja. Vastuu on Hamasin ja heitä äänestäneiden palestiinalaisten. Kuten aina, Israel pyrkii välttämään siviiliuhreja. (Israelin puolustusvoimat ovat jopa jättäneet viestejä gazalaisten puhelimiin varoittaen näitä iskuista.) Israelilla ei ole hirveästi vaihtoehtoja. Rauhanomainen ratkaisu ei voi syntyä, kun toisen osapuolen viralliseen ideologiaan kuuluu two state -ratkaisun vastustaminen. Kun Israel pyrki yksipuolisesti rauhaan vetäytymällä Gazasta, "demokraattisesti" valittu Hamas palkitsi tämän kaappaamalla lopunkin vallan Fatahilta ja kiihdyttämällä Israeliin kohdistuvaa rakettitulta.

Huonoon jamaan ajetut terroristit voivat tosin aina luottaa YK:n ja muun maailman (USA:ta lukuunottamatta) tukeen:

Hätäistunto hyväksyi Venäjän luonnosteleman ei-sitovan lausunnon, jossa vaadittiin Israelin ilmaiskujen lopettamista. Lisäksi palestiinalaisjärjestöjä vaaditaan lopettamaan raketti-iskut Israeliin.
Aloitteen hätäistunnosta teki Libya, joka on tällä hetkellä ainoa arabimaa turvallisuusneuvostossa. Neuvosto kokoontui suljettuun hätäistuntoon varhain lauantaina Suomen aikaa.

Sivistyneiden valtioiden tulisi erota tästä niin sanotusta maailmanjärjestöstä. Lähi-idän tulitauot ovat turhia: ne ainoastaan tarjoavat palestiinalaisterroristeille mahdollisuuden uudelleenaseistautua, kerätä voimiaan ja suunnitella uutta iskua. Tämä on nähty miljoona kertaa.

Puolustusministeri Ehud Barak FoxNews-kanavan haastattelussa (via Yle):

- Pyydätte meitä tekemään tulitauon Hamasin kanssa. Se on sama kuin jos teiltä pyydettäisiin tulitaukoa al-Qaidan kanssa. Tämä on asia, jota emme voi hyväksyä.

Jopa Egypti tajuaa, että Hamas on vastuussa tilanteen räjähtämisestä. Egypti on myös syyttänyt Hamasia avustustyön vaikeuttamisesta. (Jokainen palestiinalainen siviiliuhri on hyvää peeärrää Hamasille. On siis loogista, että Hamas pyrkii maksimoimaan palestiinalaissiviiliuhrien määrää.)

Tämänpäiväisen Satakunnan Kansan pääkirjoitus oli otsikoitu Rauhan juhla päättyi pommitukseen. Tämän jälkeenkin syytetään Israelia joulurauhan rikkomisesta. Pääkirjoituksessa toistetaan sitä samaa meemiä, että Israelilla ei oikeastaan missään tilanteessa ole mitään oikeutta tehdä yhtään mitään muuta kuin olla tekemättä mitään:

Oikeutettuja (Israelin kostoiskut) eivät ole millään muotoa. Palestiinalaisten tunkeminen tarkoin vartioidulle alueelleen Gazaan ilman todellisia mahdollisuuksia parempaan elämään ja yleensäkään ihmisarvoiseen elämään on raakaa sortopolitiikkaa.

Tällaista roskaa satakuntalaiset joutuvat lukemaan. Palestiinalaiset tietenkin rikkoivat rauhan jo yli viikko sitten. Gaza joutui Israelin miehittämäksi arabimaiden aloittaman kuuden päivän sodan jälkeen vuonna 1967. Sodan jälkeen arabimaat kieltäytyivät neuvottelemasta Israelin kanssa rauhasta. Israelin Gazaa koskevat intressit ovat turvallisuusintressejä eli mitään "sortopolitiikkaa" ei ole. Gazalaisia ovat sortaneet lähinnä palestiinalaiset, Egypti ja muut arabimaat käyttäessään Palestiinan kysymystä poliittisena aseena.

Pommitukset ovat ilman muuta oikeutettuja aivan kuten Suomella oli oikeus puolustaa itseään talvisodassa. Tosin kun itsepuolustuksen pukee ovelasti kostoiskuksi, on helpompi argumentoida Israelin politiikkaa vastaan.

Israelilla ei ole ainoastaan oikeutta, vaan velvollisuus puolustaa kansalaistensa henkeä, kuten jenkkikongressin edustaja Howard L. Berman toteaa:

Israel has a right, indeed a duty, to defend itself in response to the hundreds of rockets and mortars fired from Gaza over the past week. No government in the world would sit by and allow its citizens to be subjected to this kind of indiscriminate bombardment. The loss of innocent life is a terrible tragedy, and the blame for that tragedy lies with Hamas.

Satakunnan Kansa jatkaa:

niin kauan kuin Israelilla on Yhdysvaltain rajaton tuki, sen toimiin Lähi-idässä on mahdotonta puuttua. Vasta Yhdysvaltojen tiukka puuttuminen asiaan voi palauttaa edes jonkinlaisen rauhan Lähi-itään.

Pelottaa edes ajatella, mitä tällä tarkoitetaan. Bill Clintonin "tiukka puuttuminen" ei johtanut mihinkään, sillä Yasser Arafatia ei kiinnostanut rauha. Vai tarkoitetaanko tiukalla puuttumisella sitä, että USA:n tulisi painostaa Israelia pidättäytymään kaikenlaiselta itsepuolustukseen tähtäävältä toiminnalta?

Eid al-Adha

Less than a week ago Muslims celebrated a holiday called Eid al-Adha, Festival of Sacrifice. Remember the story about Abraham where he was about to kill his own son (Isaac if you ask Christians or Jews, Ishael if you ask Muslims) simply because God asked him to? Well, that's what they're celebrating:

Eid al-Adha is a religious festival celebrated by Muslims (including the Druze) worldwide to commemorate the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ishmael as an act of obedience to God.

Oh, what a wonderful thing to celebrate! Seriously, what goes on inside the heads of these people? (And by "these people" I don't mean Muslims only; naturally Christians consider this a great tale as well.) Doesn't surprise me though: following a religion requires one to completely give up his sense of reason and to make a slave of himself.

It is worshipping silly stories like this that infects cultures with toxic traits. If someone's willingness to kill his own son for some insane reason is something to be celebrated then is it any wonder that honor killings are so (relatively) frequent among Muslims?

And what is Europe going to do about this? My guess is that as the amount of Muslims in Europe shoots up our politicians will find ways to accommodate holidays like Eid al-Adha.

Hyvää tarkoittavat ihmiset ja järjestöt tapaavat aiheuttaa vilunväristyksiä. Eräs tällainen järjestö on yhdenvertaisuus.fi. Heidän eräs kampanjansa tähtää syrjinnän lopettamiseen työpaikoilla:

Syrjinnästä vapaa alue -kampanja on kaikenlaisen syrjinnän, kiusaamisen ja häirinnän vastainen tiedotuskampanja, jonka avulla organisaatiot ja työyhteisöt tuovat julki sitoutumisensa syrjimättömyyden periaatteeseen. Syrjinnästä vapaaksi alueeksi julistautuminen merkitsee syrjinnän vastustamista, siihen puuttumista sekä ihmisten yhdenvertaisuuden tunnustamista.
Julistautuminen on myös merkki työntekijöille, työnhakijoille ja asiakkaille siitä, että organisaatio toivottaa kaikki ihmiset tervetulleiksi riippumatta sukupuolesta, iästä, etnisestä taustasta, uskonnosta tai vakaumuksesta, mielipiteestä, terveydentilasta, vammaisuudesta tai seksuaalisesta suuntautumisesta.

Tällaisten propagandakampanjoiden sietäisi jo loppua. Kaikenlaisen multikulti- ja feminismipropagandan lopullinen tulos on vain aiheuttaa sekaannusta. Saatko vähemmän rahaa kuin kollegasi? Tämän täytyy johtua ihonväristäsi, sukupuolestasi tai iästäsi! Eipä näille kampanjoille taida olla loppua näkyvissä, kun propaganda nähtävästi puree:

Yhä useampi pitkälle koulutettu nainen kokee työssään, että hänen sukupuolestaan on haittaa palkkauksessa. Koulutetuista naisista tuntuu myös muita naisia useammin, että sukupuoli haittaa uralla etenemistä. (Via Ihmissuhteet.)

Tämä siis siitä huolimatta, että sukupuoleen kohdistuvasta laajamittaisesta syrjinnästä, siis sellaisesta, joka selittäisi sen "naisen euro on 80 senttiä", ei ole todisteita. Kohta firmat eivät enää uskalla torjua työpaikkaa hakevaa vähemmistön edustajaa, vaikka tämä olisi taitojensa puolesta muita hakijoita heikompi. Hyvää tarkoittavien ihmisten mielestä tällä ei tietenkään ole mitään väliä: diversiteetti on voimavara itsessään, joka kyllä kompensoi varsinaisten taitojen puutetta.

Nämä järjestöt ovat todellisia ja niitä pyörittävät todelliset ihmiset. Joku taisi vähän aikaa sitten väittää, että Ayn Randin romaanien pahikset ovat karikatyyrejä. Hah!

Capping executive pays

Does it piss you off that some individuals - the very individuals who're now being held responsible for the financial mess - are getting paid an awful lot of money? One of the few things I've learned during my studies is that in an ideal market economy the bosses, just as their subordinates, are paid according to their marginal productivity. According to theory, this is an inevitable result of competition. But we often do not live in an ideal market economy; there just is not enough competition and this argument is often used to refute the idea that markets should be allowed to allocate wages/pays. This, of course, is stupid. Even if markets are not always fully efficient (or "perfect") two things still count:
1) Even if markets are not "perfect" in market economies, they're still quite perfect enough.
2) Attempts by the government to increase competition by means other than laissez-faire often fail and not only because bureaucrats lack relevant information but also because of rent seeking. Some producers seek ways to influence politicians in a way that'd result in a better market position but less free market capitalism. As has often been said, the so called capitalists are often the worst enemies of capitalism. Excessive government interference is not an uncommon result which is not exactly a wonder considering the fact that the public is driven by populist misconceptions ("ending agricultural subsidies will leave you starving", "speculators are responsible for price increases" etc.) about economics.

So how would limiting executive pay help anyone? If governments feel uncomfortable using taxpayer money on bailing out rich people then maybe they should not be doing so in the first place. Is there any logic behind the idea that less money attracts better people?

And then there's the moral side of the story: envy. Spiteful, petty individuals are for capping executive pay simply because they can't stand having a neighbour who's got a bigger house.

Are we all Keynesians now?

It's the return of the shortsighted "In the long run we're all dead" (Keynes in Monetary Reform) kind of thinking that dominated political thinking ever since the Great Depression but ended in the stagflationary seventies and eighties. Apparently Obama has a plan to create 2.5 million new jobs by investing in infrastructure and green technology. Wow, another grand plan by a statist to help the ailing private sector! What next, tax hikes and more union power? It seems that Obama is learning all the wrong lessons from the disastrous New Deal.

As several economist, in a letter to the British Telegraph, warned: "It is misguided for the Government to believe that it knows how much specific sectors of the economy need to shrink and which will shrink 'too rapidly' in a recession... Thus the Government cannot know how to use an expansion in expenditure that would not risk seriously misallocating resources."

And what to do once the current crisis is over? How long is it going to take to bring down all the regulations, debts and obstacles to sound economic growth initiated during this phase of shortsightedness?

This concerns Obama's Transition Economic Advisory Board, a board no doubt set to destroy the United States economy as soon as possible. As a Financial Times blogger notes, these guys are mostly labor union meanies, business people, protectionists and lawyers:

Except for a depressingly small minority among them, lawyers know nothing. They are incapable of logic. They don’t know the difference between necessary and sufficient conditions or between type I and type II errors. Indeed, any concept of probability is alien to them. They don’t understand the concepts of opportunity cost and trade off. They cannot distinguish between normative and positive statements.

In the Obama world this must be a part of that grand Change, a true bipartisan effort to save the US economy.

But worse, I'm sure, is on the way. No doubt Obama will take action by following in the footsteps of Hoover and FDR, presidents with experience in making matters worse, such as turning recessions into depressions. So, will there be a tax hike?

Paul Krugman

Krugman is by no means a bad economist, but he should just stick to his strengths instead of spewing out crap like this:

Last night wasn’t just a victory for tolerance; it wasn’t just a mandate for progressive change; it was also, I hope, the end of the monster years.
What I mean by that is that for the past 14 years America’s political life has been largely dominated by, well, monsters.

And in our national discourse, we pretended that these monsters were reasonable, respectable people.

As anyone who's been reading this blog knows, I'm no fan of the past eight years but expecting some kind of a major change for the better is naive and not grounded on facts. The problem with Krugman is that he's using his professional reputation to get people to listen to his political views that are not supported by the science he practices. This leads some people to use Krugman as some kind of an argumentum ad auctoritatem to push their views on issues like the minimum wage.

But it's really no wonder that a Democrat partisan like Krugman is so anxious to see another Democrat partisan in the White House:

Lyinginponds.com, a website that tracks partisanship among American political columnists, rates Mr Krugman second in the overall partisan slant of his columns, behind only Ann Coulter, a fiercely (and often incoherently) conservative polemicist.

The end is nigh - or maybe not

With Obama winning the elections (Ohio just went for Obama), a fraction of us are asking ourselves how low will the US go? It's not so much Obama that you should be worried about. He's reasonably smart and has taken steps toward the center after winning the primaries. But the real worry is that the Democrats could get sixty Senators elected. This would strip the Republicans of their ability to use filibuster. The US federal budget could get out of hands. (In all fairness, it already is out of hands.) Keynesian economic policies with emphasis on short-term results (Keynes himself stated that "In the long run we're all dead.") could once again dominate. Obama is known for not going against his party so I don't think we will be seeing many vetoes. (Again, in all fairness, not that we have seen many vetoes during the Bush years.) Also, Obama has already surrounded himself with questionable individuals who may end up in powerful positions. However, despite Obama's will to tax & spend it may be reality, according to a Nobel laureate economist, that will prescribe Obama with a dose of moderation. Taxing capital gains and dividens won't help the "Main Street", particularly not now when incentives to invest and produce have suffered so much. Worth noting is that Obama's advisors don't even seem to agree on one of Obama's central campaign issues, moving health insurance toward universal coverage.

Funny how those left-wingies who complained about money and media coverage during the last presidential elections are now silent because it's their candidate who's loaded and portrayed in a positive light by the media, unlike John McCain. Compared to MSNCB, FoxNews is fair & balanced. But dominating television and the print media is not enough. Left-wingies in American Congress want to bring the traditionally conservative talk radio closer to the political center via legislation. With Obama in the White House and the Democrats heavily present in Congress the so called Fairness Doctrine may very well pass. (Obama has stated that he opposes it, but since when has Obama had the guts to go against his party?) And if Americans have it bad then Europeans are in a much worse situation. No one endorses McCain. Hell, even The Economist went for Obama after initially supporting McCain. (Not that this was a surprise: you could clearly see The Economist turning toward Obama as a result of McCain's moves toward the religious right.)

Some will wrongfully praise Obama for bringing the troops home, but they're already coming home. It was Bush and McCain who went against public opinion (and that of the Iraq Study Group) and increased the amount of troops in Iraq. This move has brought violence down by more than 90%. Obama says he wants to send more troops after bin Laden, which is not a bad idea (Al Qaeda has seen its repuation fade and killing bin Laden would only increase their peril) but even this has been made possible by the success of the troop surge in Iraq. I have no idea how Obama is going to respond to a nuclear-ambitious Iran.

McCain could have won. He was trailing his fellow Republicans in the primaries and was running out of money. But he managed to attract moderates and independents by being a maverick and a tough SOB in general. Some years back he blasted the religious right by calling them "Agents of Intolerance" and has fought against his own party on many issues such as torture, immigration and climate change. He has staunchly advocated free trade, even slashing farm subsidies in front of a crowd consisting of farmers (though he has also advocated silly ideas such as gas tax holidays). But then he picked Sarah Palin, an inexperienced religious nut, as his vice presidential candidate to attract the Evangelical vote. This naturally contributed to alienating many independents and moderates by turning culture wars into an issue, although not a highly visible issue. Also, McCain didn't fare too well in the debates. Obama sounded smart, like he had a plan to every problem, but he was wrong on the issues. McCain had every opportunity to prove Obama wrong, but it wasn't until the second debate that McCain managed to link Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac to the Democratic establishment and the current credit crisis. McCain's best hope has been his experience on foreign policy issues, a strenght clearly visible in the debates. But that never was enough.

Had Obama lost, the defeat certainly would have been blamed on rednecks and racists, but by now it should be obvious that Obama's race has been a major advantage. At least Europeans are enthusiastic to have a black man in the White House, but this may reflect their own sense of failure concerning Europe's failed immigration policies. It's been a running joke everywhere for years that Republican voters are stupid, but just hear why people support Obama and it's all about some vague change. Many will be voting for Obama strictly because of his skin color, not even knowing what he stands for, as Howard Stern here so vividly demonstrates.

Hopefully the Republicans are able to stage a comeback but only after distancing themselves from the big-government compassionate conservatism of the past eight years. The credit crisis will pose a problem but also an opportunity, so hopefully the Republicans are back in the next midterm elections with plenty of small-government candidates. A new Clintonite era is possible.

Edit: McCain's concession speech made my eyes tear up. I'd like to see a Finnish politican hold a speech like that.

Ora et labora

Myönnän lukevani Raamattua silloin tällöin. Kun nuorempana koin kristinuskon ehkä jopa vakavimmaksi yhteiskunnalliseksi ongelmaksi, Raamatusta oli kiva etsiä kaikenlaisia juttuja joiden avulla pystyin puhkomaan reikiä kristinuskon käsitteisiin maailmankaikkeudesta. Raamattu on parhaimpia argumentteja kristinuskoa vastaan. Liberaalille egoistille Raamattu tietenkin edustaa kaikkea hirveää: yhteisöllisyyttä, alistumista, irrationalismia jne.

Mutta miksi kristityt ovat niin kommunismin vastaisia ja miksi kommunistit ovat niin kristinuskon vastaisia? Onko Marxin asema auktoriteettina niin merkittävä, että käsitteestä uskonnosta "oopiumina kansalle" ei voida luopua? Kommunistithan eivät ole mitenkään erityisen rationaalisia ihmisiä, uskovathan he esim. talousasioissa kaikenlaiseen magiaan, ja kommunismin romahdettua marxilaiset ovat päätyneet mm. vihreisiin liikkeisiin, joiden tiedetään suhtautuvan myönteisesti kaikenlaiseen hömppään (vaihtoehtoinen lääketiede, sukupuolen - genderin - biologittomuus, Gaia-teoria jne.).

Raamattu on läpeensä sosialistinen kirja. Raamatun mukaan raha on kaiken pahan alku ja juuri, itsekkyys on paha asia ja yhteisomistus rulaa:

Uskovat pysyttelivät yhdessä, ja kaikki oli heille yhteistä. He myivät talonsa ja tavaransa, ja rahoista jaettiin kaikille sen mukaan kuin kukin tarvitsi. (Ap.t. 2:44-45)

Koko uskovien joukolla oli yksi sydän ja yksi sielu. Kukaan ei pitänyt omanaan sitä, minkä omisti, vaan kaikki oli heille yhteistä... Ne, jotka omistivat tilan tai talon, myivät sen ja luovuttivat kauppasumman apostolien haltuun, ja näiltä jokainen sai rahaa tarpeensa mukaan. (Ap.t. 4:32-35)

Seuraavassa Pyhä Henki lahtaa ahneita kapitalisteja, jotka eivät suostu kollektivisoimaan omaisuuttaan:

Muuan Ananias-niminen mies myi yhdessä vaimonsa Safiran kanssa maatilan, mutta pani vaimonsa tieten osan kauppahinnasta syrjään. Loput hän luovutti apostolien haltuun. Silloin Pietari sanoi: "Ananias, miksi olet antanut sydämesi Saatanan valtaan? Miksi yritit pettää Pyhää Henkeä ja jättää maatilan hinnasta osan itsellesi? Tilahan oli sinun, kun et vielä ollut myynyt sitä, ja sinun olivat myös rahat, kun sen myit. Kuinka saatoit ryhtyä tällaiseen tekoon? Et sinä ole valehdellut ihmisille, vaan Jumalalle." Nämä sanat kuullessaan Ananias lyyhistyi kuolleena maahan, ja kaikki, jotka olivat tätä kuulemassa, joutuivat kauhun valtaan. Nuoret miehet kietoivat Ananiaan ruumiin vaatteeseen, kantoivat hänet ulos ja hautasivat hänet.
Kolmisen tuntia myöhemmin tuli Ananiaan vaimo sisään, tapahtuneesta mitään tietämättä. Pietari kysyi häneltä: "Sano minulle, tähänkö hintaan te maatilan myitte?" "Niin, juuri siihen hintaan", vastasi nainen. Silloin Pietari sanoi: "Kuinka te yksissä tuumin ryhdyitte koettelemaan Herran Henkeä? Kuuletko askelia oven takaa? Ne, jotka hautasivat miehesi, kantavat täältä myös sinut." Siinä samassa nainen kaatui kuolleena Pietarin jalkoihin. Nuoret miehet tulivat sisään ja näkivät naisen kuolleen. He veivät hänet pois ja hautasivat hänet miehensä viereen. Kauhu valtasi koko seurakunnan ja kaikki jotka tästä kuulivat. (Ap.t. 5:1-11)

Seuraavassa vielä hyvä ohje niille, jotka eivät muuten hyväksyisi kollektiivien johtajia:

Jokaisen on suostuttava esivaltansa alaisuuteen. Eihän ole esivaltaa, joka ei olisi Jumalalta peräisin, häneltä ovat vallankäyttäjät saaneet valtuutensa. Joka vastustaa esivaltaa, nousee siis Jumalan säädöstä vastaan, ja ne, jotka näin tekevät, saavat rangaistuksensa. Ei sen, joka tekee oikein, tarvitse pelätä viranomaisia, vaan sen, joka tekee väärin. Jos siis tahdot elää pelkäämättä esivaltaa, tee oikein! Silloin saat siltä kiitosta. Se on Jumalan palvelija ja toimii sinun parhaaksesi. Mutta jos teet väärin, pelkää! Esivalta ei kanna miekkaa turhaan. Se on Jumalan palvelija ja panee täytäntöön väärintekijälle kuuluvan rangaistuksen. Siksi on suostuttava esivallan alaisuuteen, ei vain rangaistuksen pelosta vaan myös omantunnon vaatimuksesta. Sen vuoksi te verojakin maksatte, sillä viranomaiset ovat Jumalan palveluksessa, kun he hoitavat tehtäviään. Antakaa jokaiselle se, mikä hänelle kuuluu: kenelle vero, sille vero, kenelle tulli, sille tulli, kenelle pelko, sille pelko, kenelle kunnia, sille kunnia. (Room. 13:1-7)

(Ylläoleva on varmasti ollut niiden tuhansien johtajien mieleen, jotka ovat pyrkineet oikeuttamaan asemansa muin kuin demokraattisin perusteluin.)

Luostarilaitoksessa kehittyi ajatus rukoilemisesta ja työnteosta, mutta luostarilaitoksetkin olivat käytännössä kollektiiveja. Max Weberin mukaan kapitalismin syntyyn vaikutti kristinuskon kehittyminen protestantismin suuntaan, mutta ei henkilökohtaisen omaisuuden akkumulaatioon ainakaan Raamatusta löydy mitään perusteita. Ehkä protestantismi on tässä mielessä jonkinlainen kristinuskon perversio.

Kristinusko on muutenkin yhteensovittamaton länsimaisten arvojen kanssa. Tästä huolimatta mm. moni amerikkalainen kristitty uskoo demokratian, kapitalismin ja vapauden olevan Jumalan lahjoja ihmiskunnalle, vaikka Raamattu on mitä vihamielisin näitä länsimaiden peruspilareita kohtaan.
