Mel Gibson - an expert on evolution

Pharyngula.org posted this a few weeks ago but I just had to put it here. A small piece of an interview between Playboy and Mel Gibson:

PLAYBOY: So you can't accept that we descended from monkeys and apes?

GIBSON: No, I think it's bullshit. If it isn't, why are they still around? How come apes aren't people yet?

First of all, someone should tell the interviewer (and Gibson) that evolution never stated that humans evolved from apes but that we share a common ancestor (this common misconception, that humans evolved from present-day monkeys, is still used by religious extremists). And why are they still around? Why wouldn't they still be around? There hasn't been any serious environmental pressure on them for millions of years, at least not until we started destroying rainforests.

Gibson is a religious fool. This is the guy who directed "The Passion of the Christ" and believes that it's an accurate version of events that occured 2000 years ago. His father, Hutton Gibson, is believed to be a Holocaust denier. Hutton has said that the number of Jews who're believed to have perished during the Holocaust has been greatly exaggerated.

But I do like Signs and the Lethal Weapon serie.
